I wrote to SWIX to inquire about running their temperature specific waxes in the wrong temperature range. This is not soemthing I do on purpose, but last week we had a 41 degree change in temp overnight, so it is hard to predict the temperature sometimes. Here is their response. BTW, SWIX produces some of the best wax in the world. I also use Dakine for some of my hot wax needs, but mainly use SWIX hot waxes. Dan T
Dan,
The warmer (softer) waxes such as CH 10 are better for repelling water, and the colder (harder) waxes such as CH 4 are better for resisting snow crystal penetration and abrasion. The waxes in the middle CH 6, CH 8 do both in varying degrees depending on snow conditions. A "universal" wax falls in the middle group.
Nevertheless, it is not a big problem to use CH 10 (warm & soft) even if the temperature drops. The wax will wear off fairly quickly in colder conditions, however. When a warmer wax will feel draggy is when the snow is new (sharp crystals) and cold. But this time of year, especially if the snow is old, it should not be a problem to ski on CH10 even if the temperature drops.
Swix has a very good three-wax system called HX Glider:
HX10, blue for cold
HX20, violet universal
HX30, yellow for wet.
Also a very good unversal wax is the F4 block wax or the F4 Pastewax. These have a fluorocarbon additive that improves glide.
