I think that I personally ride too wide. Even though it feels a bit more stable to start off, I think it definitely influences turning and is the reason why my right board tends to drag when turning left.

I would guess that the width has to do with the width of the boards as well as the build of the rider. I have also heard people talking about shoulder width, which I find a bit confusing.:confused: Does this mean the left board has to be effectively underneath the left shoulder (and same for right) ?

Shoulder width basically means if you stand upright the outsides of your feet will be in line with your shoulders. The same width as your shoulders.

Go to this link and part way down there is a whole section on carving.

When I'm actually riding, I keep my boards about my shoulder's width apart. I mean, when I'm bombing down a run, this is how I will ride. It allows me the most stability, I find. My skier friend says I look out of control, but I'm rarely actually out of control : P

I ride with my board so close together that they tap against each other a bit. But some on here call me 'Old School' :)

I tried that straight down the slope, trying to catch a very fast skiiing colleague of mine on a steeo slope. I was very fast and it felt out of control. Frankly the speed was out my league. I decide to slow-down by turning and then managed to wipe-out and go head-first down to the slope on my back. :D.

But hey, no brain, no pain!
