I'm dying to try skiboards! I'm a skater and play roller derby so I skate about 10 hours a week. Although I like to ski, I'm intrigued by the similarity between skating and skiboarding. Problem is, I can't find anywhere to try it out. On a recent trip to Stowe, VT, I called everywhere looking for rentals or demos and came up empty handed. One shop laughed told me that skiboarding was a fad that had already come and gone. If anyone knows where I can rent equipment in the northeast, PLEASE let me know!

You'll fall in love. I've never heard of anyone not liking skiboarding once they tried it.

There are a number of riders in NY and I suspect they would be willing to meet up with you. Check the Meet Up and Ride section and contact those posting.

There are a few guys having a meet up and ride at Jay Peak in a few weeks. Maybe PM one of them to see if they have some extra equipment you could try out...

Buy a cheap skiboard on craigslist, rent boots, and then resell the skiboard if you don't like it!

Where in New York are you located? I can definitely set you up to ride with some people and try out some Revel8 boards.

I'm on Long Island. Also I plan to be at Jiminy Peak next Saturday.

I don't know any skiboarders who ride up there. I would join you as I love riding all over. But, I moved from New York to Colorado in August and I wont be visiting to ride on the east coast until the first week of April. But, there are a ton of resorts within a few hours of where you are that guys ride at including Bear Creek, Mountain Creek, Hunter Mountain, Windham, and if you are willing to haul it all of the way up to Vermont, Mount Snow is always a favorite. There is another rider on here from Long Island, Nick, who is all about meeting up with other riders. His name on here is ny300z. I also suggest getting out to the Creek-to-Creek Meet in two weeks. The Saturday meet will take place at Bear Creek and the Sunday meet will take place at Mountain Creek. Mountain Creek is the closest to you and will have the largest amount of riders. There will be a bunch of guys with extra boards and bindings that if you get in touch with ahead of time I'm sure will be more than happy to assist you with trying boards out and teaching you some techniques. Respond on the official Creek-to-Creek Meet thread.

Hey I appreciate all the advice. I can't believe how little interest shops seem to have in skiboards. Just got off the phone with Potter Brothers in Jiminy who told me nobody even made them anymore. Good news - I found a shop in my town that rents Head Big Easys - not ideal but I'm excited to try them anyway.

Thanks!

Yeah, Potter Brothers is unusual with how widespread they are in the north east medium sized resorts yet their knowledge and what they carry is limited. I grew up in Middletown and I remember going there with my skiboards last season to get some wax, check out boots, and see what outerwear they had and they seemed pretty clueless on proper waxing, their prices were pretty outrageous, and the staff were just a bunch of high school students who didn't know much of anything. The only benefit I see with Potter Brothers is the deals that they carry on lift tickets.

Welcome to the forum!

Head Big Easys aren't the greatest, but if they are cheap enough and you can't hook up with anyone on here to ride with, then they're worth buying. They'll give you a good idea of what it feels like to ski on a short ski, and if you love it (you will) then you can upgrade to a true Revel8 skiboard. A good number of us started on models similar to those (including myself): Big Easys, Salomon Snowblades, Elan Freelines, Firefly, etc.

Afterwards, you can resell them or keep them around as a backup pair for your friends who wanna try!
