I found two pieces of metal in the shed the other day and wondered if it would work as a rail.

They are about 5 1/2 feet long, 3 inches wide, and 1.5 inch in depth.

Here are some pics from different angles..

First off, will this work?

I have never built anything before so I am looking for an inexpensive and easy way to turn these into a rail.

Thanks.

to make that into a rail you will have to have a hell of a touch for tig welding that looks like aluminum and does not look strong at all. needs alot of reinfocemances if you want to build it high of just thow it on the ground and slide it small....

is it channel iron? and how thick is it? do u want it just to be a flat rail? how high do u want it?

give me the answers and i might be able to draw up a blueprint

1. i dont know what a channel iron is.
2. it is about one mim thick. i cant twist it or anything though.
3. yes a flat rail is great.
4. maybe a foot and a half or 2 feet.

is it possible to keep it fairly simple to make? like hammer and nails. lol

i have never built anything.

thanks.

if u put both ends on something and push the middle down how bad does it flex

well, today i took some actual measurements.

length of each is 67 3/8" so 134 6/8" together as a long rail.

width is 2 9/16"

the opening at the bottom in the pic is 1 5/8"

the depth is 1 1/8"

and the thickness of the walls are between 1mm & 2mm.

I put both ends on something leaving roughly 5 inches on both sides and stood on the rail. I jumped up and down on it and it held my whole weight, but of course, you can feel that it bounces.

also, do you think i can use a wooden kicker and cover it with snow or would i have to make a kicker out of snow right on the spot.

that is basically the main problem for me since i have no experience in this stuff. will a drill go through metal so i can have holes? i dont know how to attach it with the wood without leaving the top of the screw exposed to rip up my bases.
