Every year I take a vacation out west (live in Ohio). This year is Big Sky. I check the skiboards but I worry about what would happen if my luggage was lost since most ski resorts don't rent anything except maybe blades (yuck). Has anyone carried skiboads on to the plane? Any suggestions in general? I would hate to go to a great mountain and spend my first day of two using blades because the luggage was lost.

in the past i have removed the bindings and put about 4 pairs in a long box and then put the bindings back in the box and carried this on the plane. no problems.

Thats a good idea. They didn't hassle you at all about it?

now i have a long atomic padded ski bag (like 200cm). fill one side with boards, bindings, goggles, jacket, pants, tools, etc and then fold the empty side over and it has straps on the outside that let me tighten it all down and then carry it on my shoulder. it works really well but i do check it so if it goes missing i'd be hatin' life.

I always just carried mine onto planes. One time they made me check them and a screwdriver I had, but usually i get through without a hitch.
If they're in a bag, chances are even less likely that they'll care.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will check a pair of boards in my wife's skiing bag, and also attempt to carry on a backup pair in a small bag just in case. I knew there was a reason that I have bought so many boards!

I travel quite a bit every year, and what I noticed is that most (not all) flights handle skis, boards, and snowboards separate from the other check-in baggage.
You know how check in baggage comes in on the conveyer is usually thrown, beat-up and mishandled? Skis, Snowboards, and even skiboards are hand-carried and handled very lightly.
The reason for this, of course, is liability. Airlines know better than to damage someone's thousand dollar ski equipment and getting sued for it.
You shouldn't worry much about traveling with skiboards, just tell them they're "shorter" skis, it's faster than explaining what a skiboard is.

i went from NJ to AZ with my skateboard in my hand (after 9/11), im pretty sure that as long as your skiboards are in a bag, they wont make you check them. just put them in a bag to be safe, small duffel bags work well for multiple pairs of skiboards
