View Full Version : New Skiboarder - Looking for Help at Bear Creek

I am new to skiboarding - an avid snowboarder for the last 3 years (got started late - in my early 40s) and just getting into skiboarding. Have been looking through the threads here, watching that Japanese carving video and looking at other skiboarding videos to pick up on technique. Have been out a few times this season and feel comfortable on them. Looking to see if anyone who goes to Bear Creek would be interesting in meeting and riding together a bit so I can jumpstart my progression. I am an old guy so only ride the trails - if my snowboard or skiboards are off the ground and I am not on the lift then something has gone really wrong. :)
For those of drinking age - I am more than happy to trade beer for skiboarding advice. In the interest of full disclosure - I am probably not riding real skiboards yet - I have Head Shapes (94cm) - got them to get started because I only paid $40 for them plus the cost of a tune-up and binding check/setting.
If interested, please send me a private message on the forum.
Cheers-
David

Hey david,
Bear could be considered my home mountain unfortunately. So if you want, i would be more than willing to teach you everything you need to know and then some. All that needs to happen is i need to find time. not this, but next weekend might work for me. let me know what you think.

David,
Can't get much better than having Dave mentor you. Just be careful with the aerials the first time. :D

technically, that doesnt mean i can teach the fundamentals^^^^
Not to worry David, Dave also knows how to carve. And more importantly, he is a great person and fun to be around. Enjoy.
Wasn't there a commercial a few years back where some kid arrives at football practice and Peyton Manning shows up unexpectedly to give him some tips?
In addition to being an off-the-chart talented rider, Dave is as friendly and personable of a young man as you will ever meet.

Dave - thanks for the quick response and willingness to coach someone just starting out. I am definitely aware of your legendary status in the skiboarding community! I feel like I might have just dropped into a line that I might not be able to ride.... :)
Thanks as well to the others that posted - good background and perspective.
I am at Bear Creek a lot - rode (snowboard) there 24 times last year so I definitely got my money's worth out of my season pass. I am there most Saturday and Sunday mornings at 8:30am waiting for the lifts to start running. Next weekend would be great if you can find the time on your end. I will send you a private message with my contact info. Looking forward to it.

Hey Bluewing,
Bear Creek isn't far from me and I haven't made a trip up there yet this year so please keep me in the know for when you'd like to go. I'm pretty much just a trail/groomers rider myself so I'd love to join you for just cruising around the mountain getting more comfortable with speed and different terrain/trail difficulty and maybe riding fakie.

THIS is why I ordered skiboards. Regardless of how fun the sport may be (Michigan has been in the 40s since my Revolts came in, so I wouldn't know. =/ ), this community is absolutely freaking outstanding, and well worth the "price of admission," so to speak.

I'll probably be at Bear this Saturday for an evening pass. Let me know if you'll be around, and I'll look for you.

my name is austin and i actually work at bear creek (season pass) and would love to have another skiboarder to ride with. i've been all over PA this year so far riding (whoopdy doo for PA lol). i am a wonderful teacher and absorber of information, so if anyone meets up with you, let me know and i will try to meet up with you guys too. anyone around, feel free to text me also at 484-274-0086. i look forward to meeting you and anyone else who comes along for the ride!!

As an aside: As some of you may be aware, Winnipeg now has a NHL hockey team again and the city has gone wild over having their beloved Jets back. Some of the pros are showing up at local outdoor hockey rinks and are having "keep away" games with the local kids. That in part will continue to keep every home game sold out for years to come. (Our home game season tickets for the next 3 years were sold out in 2 minutes when they went up for sale!)
Being able to ride with those considered elite in our sport I believe establishes the same level of loyalty.
On that note, thanks to all the elite riders. We appreciate what you do for our skill development and the skiboarding sport!

Looks like I'll definitely be there Saturday evening. I have a couple friends who I'll be introducing to the sport, so I'll be sticking to the easy runs for at least the first couple hours.

Had a good day at Bear Creek on Saturday riding with Dave Lynam, Talon Seitzinger, Jared Franklin and Jon Lynam. Thanks to Dave for helping me get my stance upright and centered - that did the trick and allowed me to bring the boards in closer and start turning better. Dave - was at Bear Creek today and progressed even further - good stuff.
So - after my 8th time out on skiboards I think my snowboarding days are done and my Rome Anthem with 390 bindings will be hitting craigslist. Skiboarding is definitely a blast.

What time were you guys there? I got there with my group around 4:30, but we mainly stayed over running the greens beside the triple chair.
We had a pretty good time. Two of the guys were brand new, and they both enjoyed themselves. One in particular picked things up really quickly. He went from the greens to the blues to hitting a couple blacks and experimenting with small kickers by the end of the night.

Thought I would share an update. I have been out on my skiboards 14 times since Jan 14th at Bear Creek when Dave Lynam helped me out with my stance and other tips. I am seriously addicted to slide down a mountain.
In no way is this bragging - more a reflection on how intuitive skiboards are to learn and progress on - I can confidently ride anything at Bear Creek. Went to Blue Mountain on Feb 10th and did everything with confidence except the double blacks - didn't give them a go but probably should have since the conditions were excellent. I feel like I have been skiboarding for years already. I can honestly say that I feel more comfortable on steeper terrain than I did on my snowboard. All this on Head 94's - can't imagine what might be possible when I get a full-on set of skiboards.
Big thanks again to Dave for helping me out.
