View Full Version : Skiboarder subject to ridicule and mistreatment...

I just got this email from a skiboarder:

I am hoping that skiboardingonline.com could show support for respectful behavior towards skiboarders/snowbladers at Red Mountain near Rossland, BC, Canada. jgreene@ski-red.com, Jim Greene the General manager is the person to contact. I am all alone here and I have been subjected to discriminatory remarks, ridicule and mistreatment from two employees now just because I am a skiboarder. Please show your support. thank you.

I just sent an email to Jim Greene explaining that a customer of his mountains has been mistreated by two members of his staff and he should look into as I would as an Owner/Manager, we'll see what happens.

Quite often us skiboarders have to put up with close minded people making fun of us because we're different and free from societal expectations but actual mountain employees should know better.

I thought i'd post this so we can share our stories and see how others have dealt with close minded people and to spotlight that we're not alone as this rider feels he is.

Some cocky skiers or snowboarders say stuff..

I've never had a worker at a mountain actually say anything, I get some looks from the lifties but nothing more. The people that work there shouldn't do that shit, we're paying for lift tickets just the same as skiers and snowboarders.

I have found that most people are somewhat intirgued by skiboards. I have never been segregated or made fun of because I'm riding them. I find that more often now, than ever before...I'm giving a "wazzup" nod to more skiboarders I see on the slopes.

There is still no excuse for anybody to say anything derrogatory towards anybody. As it's been said before..we all pay the same price for lift tickets that day. I would be pissed if I was a skiboarder 10-15 years ago and getting laughed at for riding a old-school snowboard. I would be pissed now.

Whatever...

Anything new on the slopes will get either extremely positive or extremely negative treatment. What you are riding is new stuff, and new = change. People either love it or hate it.

Imagine what the first snowboarders felt when they were on the mountain 20 years ago among thousands of skiers. And now look at them. At the local mountain, Snowboarders outnumber two-plankers 10 to 1, although there are growing numbers of skiboarders every time I visit (and show off)

You should enjoy what you do and don't worry about what everyone else does or thinks.

i've actually gotten wierd looks from other riders, people who ride skinny salomon or elan boards. i guess they arent used to seeing real skiboards

I agree with that. My last day out, I saw a ton of skiboarders. But I can say that I saw these for sure.

1 pair of MNP's
1 pair of M7's
3 pair of Headliners
a couple unrecognizables.

shit-ton of Salomons (groms, minimax, snowblades, SB-XX)

Then my BG's, wifes MNP's, and kids Taxi's.

Overall, the still see more "mainstream rentals" and Salomons than anything else. I do sometimes get some stares because of the pure white topsheets with the fatty-daddy tips/tails. Not too many of those around. Even though I'm not a big fan of the Taxis' 82cm...the older topsheet design was awesome and gets lots of stares (the 11 year old boy loves the attention).

2 years ago I would get a lot of attention from other people while standing in line at the lift, asking me what they were, last year though the slopes were filled with firsttime 'skiers' who were either 50+ or just drunk fratboys, all on small 'snowblades' either salomon or fischer, I've never even seen a Line, Canon or Groove skiboard in real life (just know em from the pictures, poor eurotrash me). So even though I have salomon's I'm still kinda rare since mine are wider. the problem with this trend is that skiers or boarders (skiing which I'm pretty good at) start to dislike me, thinking I'm one of those shitty assholes who stops on tables or sits with a beer on the landingspot, oow and they just ski on them instead of carving, if ya know what I mean. and actually I don't blame them I get irritated by these people too. but as soon as I do some jumps and rails they give me respect anyway since most snowboarders are even worse than me at grinding.

so take make this far too long story a lil shorter:
just ignore the arrogance of boarders and skiers, practice, show some mad tricks, and you WILL get the respect you deserve

"Do you ski or snowboard?"
"No, I skiboard"
"What's that?!"
"they're like small wide ski's"
"Ooooow you mean BigFoots! haha funny"
"No longer mine are 99cm!"
"Ooow you mean funcarve's?"
"No those are longer and are not twintips"
"Twintips?"
"Forget about that"
"oooooow you mean snowblades I know them!"
"No you SH!@#$(@ F*@CK DIE!!!!!!

(this happens many, many times)

haha yeah man aint that the truth..
generally though people dont know about bigfoots or funcarves, etc, they go straight to teh snowblades and insist thats what they're called, like they'd know so much better than me.

i think theres a lot of resorts that wont let you patroll on skiboards.. our ski patrol just usually sits inside. when you go in there theres usually like 20 of them just sitting around inside. i havnt had any workers say anything bad about me skiboarding.. in fact i saw 3 of the lifties renting them the other night. they were using poles and it looked pretty funny. but everyone here is 100% guarenteed in their mind that theyre really called snowblades.. it really gets to me.

So what's in a name? Personally, I don't think it really matters what they're called, I'm sure when snowboards first came out, people had strange names for them too.

Does *Snurfer* ring a bell to anyone?

And can you really say how far the word *ski* evolved from?

People won't accept you any more if you're constantly correcting them. They might even reverse their attitude towards you. Just have fun and call them skiboards when you're referring to them. Practice some tricks and be more daring. Whatever happens, the sport grows.

What are those?
Skiboards
They're small. Are they fast?
Let's race and find out.
15 mins. later
$%&@# How do those little things go so fast?
Later! Have a good one!

Good Point there Zender!

Well the best way is to ignore the ones that don't know jack.
If you love doing something who cares about who picks on you and all that bologne.

Even when I agro skate I get dissed and ish by skateboarders and bikers.
In this city we're brought down to the lowest level but we don't care we just huck it like there's no tommorow.
We don't even have our own skate night at the park no more...they make us share it with Bikers

but anyways.
Skiboarding rocks and will succeed

ahh again today
I was skating
and then out of no where

"I respect skating but I hate those skiblades. No one here skiblades right"

and then I had to say something

"I skiboard. It's actually f@#$ing rocks"

Greco

Just like anything, when people or ignorant of something they have misconceptions and preconceived ideas. Most people have only seen snobladers and skibladers and think that short skis are only for young kids who don't know what they're doing. What I find is once people are educated about skiboarding and then they see someone who skiboards well and makes it look good their misconceptions are blown away and they have a new found respect...but, as you know it's tough to change the world .... especially when there are so few of us. but we'll never give up!!!

Uh, what up, first post here...

Anyways, this little grommet kid (snowboarder/skateboarder) was talking to me (rollerblader/new skiboarder) and I told him that I wanted to skiboard this year. He said to me, "Why? Skiboards are weak. Plus, everyone hates on them."

I laughed in his T-Dog face for telling me not to do something because everyone else hates it. I mean, I've rollerbladed for 5+ years, I think I can take the hate.

TRS Is actually for Trois-Rivieres Skating ... our "crew"

we've chosen that name before the first TRS series came out 2 years ago (or is that 3? anyway...)

but for old schools I know that the TRS name existed at the beginning of aggressive skates from Rollerblade....
but anyway

=P everyone thinks it's linked to the skates....and that'S legitimate, but it's not! =P almost everyone in town had a pair though =P
