About european skiboardsite...

Hey,

to all of you european skiboarders:

I just started a little on a website for us euro-skiboarders, you guys still want one? Because I really like doing webpages, just never know what to do about, so I'm just glad if I get something serious to do... That is if you trust me enough.. ;) If you like I can get some screenies to show you what it looks like and you can say your opinion about it and I'll make it into something everyone likes and perhaps you can later send your pics and maybe also some tips and guides to newbies and stuff like that... The newbie-tips are really needed, 'cause I've actually been looking for some myself (preparing for comeback after 2 yrs, and I wasn't even good before that.. :D ) and there is VERY little of that on the web, so if we want more skiboarders in Europe that is important...

Well, hope you'll like it and are prepared to back me up on this.

good idea though I can't help you on the newbie guide since I never understood that stuff, I've read stuff about "how to jump" but the only advice I can give to people is: just go straight at it, pray to god and hope that you won't die, the whole 'leaning forward or backward' and 'centrifugal forces' or whatever stuff doesn't work when you actually try it (at least it didn't work for me)

maybe you can summarize what you want to place on the site here ,like the contents and stuff

try to think of something that actually differentiates the already existing skiboarding sites from a european skiboarding site...

Hehe, I see what you mean.. Actually now that you say it I don't really know how to make it understandable/useful.. Almost everything is really self-explanatory(spelling?)...

About the different "parts":

So, you're good with graphics, huh?

That sounds good, 'cause I'm not as good as I would like to be...
For example, I have a tendancy to make my webpages in disguisting colors, that I think are nice for the eyes to look at and all but my friends tell me it sucks.. :D

I've made some buttons and a little logo, and also feel best if I can do those things myself, but a nice little flash-intro wouldn't hurt I guess.. :) I'm no flash-master.. :)

And about the videos: I've planned to put them in the Gallery, like a sub-choose on the main gallery page with Pics or Vids, like one of the other skiboarding-page which I don't remember exactly which one it was...

I've thought about one more thing, most skiboardingpages I've checked lately are either dead or almost dead (not updated for about a year), so there we could have a great advantage over many sites to get visitors by just keeping a high update frequency.. I could for example make a system where we "the crew" can log in and, when we have some spare time, upload new pictures or write a little something, maybe reviews of the mountains we visist... [The ideas keep flowing..]

Uhm, if u think I'm getting too carried away here, tell me! I usually do that when I get enthusiastic.. ;)

I think it's a great idea allthough I probably won't be someone with a lot of input to your website. If I'm lucky I got 2 weeks of boarding on mountains each year and the rest of the year I have to go to this shitty indoorslope (which is better than nothing at all) or I'm busy with flatlanding (which is quite easy to find spots for in Holland ;) )
I guess that's the whole problem with wintersports, who's gonna update your website while everybody's hanging at the beach with 30C? but hey, just give it a try and maybe it'll work out quite nice

I have some experience with gfx and layout and also with flash,yea.
so if you need help with this let me know - perhaps you simply send me a mail with a link to the site and I'll take a look at it and tell you if I could do better :)

in summertime perhaps the website should have a big sign like "SUMMER BREAK" ;)
that would be an excuse for none activity until the next winter comes ;)

The page isn't up'n'running yet, just running it on my computer (without internet connection..) but in a few days/weeks I'll get fairly-high-speed-internet(1mbit/s) and will get a LAN going in the house so the site will be online when my computer's running, which is almost always.. :)

Yep, that's probably what will happen, 'cause there's probably not very much need for a skiboardsite in the summer anyway.

nice work, I like the first logo especially because of the skiboarder doing a cross. but it should be a lil smoother, I can trace the picture for you so you'll have a vectorfile which you can make bigger or smaller without the annoying pixels fucking it up, just a suggestion

i guess the rule of thumb for a popular web page would be neutral, pale colours. and the underlying theme should be the sport (skbording) with no other characteristic attributed (be it rip, flowers or spacetravel) ;)

That thing about me doing the coding and leaving the rest to you sounds nice, we'll see what happens, 'cause I can really easily change the looks of it by playing around in the CSS-file.. If I feel it just doesn't work I can send it to you for a total piece-by-piece rebuild.. :)
About the logo: I personally liked the top one the most, but I'd like it a bit slimmer since the top-frame-design will be useless if the upper frame gets too big... And I really want the top frame, because I'm thinking we could simply put the SBOL-banner in it so it's visible on all pages, IF that's ok with Greco, 'cause then if you write the direct link to a page the banner won't show.. :(

E.S.C. sounds kinda funny 'cause I think of the Esc-button on the keyboard when I see it.. :D We could have a vote about the name later and anyone who has a suggestion for a name can say theirs and we'll choose one together.

I have a question now to y'all: Do you think we should have one forum of our own in addition to linking to this one or should we just use the SBOL one? I'd like to NOT build a whole forum right now because I have never made one before.. :D
Maybe we could first open the page with the SBOL forum only and then I can take my time to build a nice "private" one just for USE/ESC, what do you think? Is there a need for one?

Uhm, I don't think there is any .eu, atleast not that normal people are allowed to register... If there is I think that's just for the official EU pages, but I could be wrong.

BTW: Haven't done anything today either, I'm very much like that: Do a little, than I get bored and do something else until I get bored with that.. But I will make myself do it some day. When I feel like it, it gets better and a lot happens in just a few hours so maybe that will be tomorrow or tuesday or wednesday, we'll see. But I will definately finish it in a matter of weeks that's for sure.

I've gotten pretty far now, got a few hours yesterday.
I changed all colors and must say I'm happy with it, using a dark blue/green color as background w/ white text and yellow menu-text.. It looks kinda neat really.. Maybe I'll change the background to a bluer shade, you can tell me what you think later when I get the new screen up. I'm in school right now so it'll come up in the evening.

First: I made a really long post and got some error so I had to rewrite...

In short: I've installed Win98 instead of WinXP and forgot to backup the site.

I'm beginning again from scratch and giving you my IP so you can see the progress and give feedback.

Got DSL on friday but XP didn't seem to understand it was connected so after some time trying to load a page I got "Page could not be displayed" error...
In Win98 it works fine. Solution?

Really nice design Tayata!

I'll do the coding, no prob! I've actually got it all up and running again but working on a different page, but as soon as I "finish"(as you know a website NEVER gets finished...) that one I'll start on this. Actually there will be much things on that site which will be almost the same on the USE, for example logging in to add articles and stuff so when I'm done with the other one I basically have like 25% of the USE code made.. :) It should be a piece of cake. Although it often ends up different when you think like that.. ;)

Do you guys have MSN messenger? It's the only chat prog I use nowadays... If it's an emergency I can use ICQ too.. :) But preferrably msngr.. My email is [nick_wiklander@hotmail.com].

but there is one thing i'd like to comment on - is it just me or there are others who think the "baby blue" of the logo and the title doesn't go together with the grayish tones of the rest of hte site??? what do you think about darkening the colour a bit?

McShane, you're right, the light blue doesn't fit. Or perhaps it's the other colors that don't fit! I'd rather have everything made to go with the blue than change the blue to go with the others, since I think the blue looks really good on the logo.

Alright - just wanted to give a small summarize in the forum of what we talked about yesterday :

We are trying to get the site starting until the end of the month. At first it will be filled with mainly informations and articles all around skiboarding in europe, our own forum will take a while until it's finished, so we will link on sbol :)
I think it's also the better resolution, cause here are more people for the beginning.

What we need now is a team for the site, actually we are : Niklaswik, Allz and myself - I think McShane would help, too ? What about qwaak ;) ?

The team's task would be to fill the site with reviews about your skiarea, articles about new trick / your skiboards and so on. This will all be managed about an online system where you can upload articles, news and the other stuff with your InternetExplorer - Niklas will code something like that.

So, just wanted to check now who will be into it ?

sorry, but I think something does not want this page to get finished :( here is what happened :
My PC crashed at thursday evening and one hdd crashed with him. The bad thing with this is that it was my main hdd with the most data on it - also the USE homepage. :(
Perhaps I can rescue it, but I think I'll have to do it again.

So, it will take a few extra days until my PC is repaired again (actually I'm not in front of mine) and until I can send the design to you, niklaswik - sorry about that.

I'll post here when there's something new.

alright, I used my last two days to build up a completely new design.
I wasn't in the mood to rebuild the old one so I sat down and created a new, which, I think, also compares better to skiboarding :)

now tell me what you think about, you find it under :

the loading times aren't the best and it needs an preloader for the pictures, I haven't made one yet, also there's no content yet and one background sound is still missing, but to get an impression of it it's enough I think ;)

so, I'm waiting for your statements so that I can finish it and pass it to niklas for the coding ...

IMPORTANT : You need IExplore 5.5 or higher or Mozilla to see the page correctly. I you don't have it you'll see a white box where the iFrame is, I also need to fix this, but haven't found a good solution yet ...
At the moment the page is optimizied for a resolution of 1024x768 - I haven't tested others yet ...

to be honest, i enjoyed the previous design better. no offence, but i think this theme is too specific (especially the skeleton thing). i prefer smth more abstract, impersonal (other than skiboarding as a sport!), since u.s.e. is for wide general public and shouldn't contain any personal touch.

Hmm, you have a point there... Maybe we should drop the skeleton..? Though the skiboard in the menu should be there, 'cause that will make anyone understand what the site's all about, which is important! It shouldn't be too abstract.. :D

I'm happy about that clear decision, I'll make a new one which will be similar to the first design. That's less work than changing all the stuff on this one.

Thanks Greco, but during development I like to keep it on my computer.. Or maybe you need to apply for a URL a while before it can be used? I've never registered any domains myself so I don't really know anything about that. :)


The time before it's "finished" all depends on what the other guys think is needed prior to "going gold".

Yeah, you got the msn search page because there is no website there but someone does own the url. The only way to know for sure is to go to a domain registrar and do a search to see if its available for purchase.

Well, the plan is that we will have a team with "special" riders AND another part of the site where anyone can join.

The "not-wanting-you-in-the-crew" is because I think you should put your energy on your own site now that you have one. Sure, the USE-site should be big, but it's also important that we have many small sites where people can see what the sport is about.. The more pages, the bigger chance that people will find atleast one of them...

Hi all,
Just thought I'd tell you a little about the progress...


Yesterday I started working on the "add link" script and the page that displays all the links and I got that to about 90% finished.. Only thing left is a function for the crew to remove links, then it's finished.

The next thing I'll do is the article-system, which is a little more complicated, but still very much like the links, so I can coy a lot from the linkscript = finished pretty quickly.

Then there is a big NOTHING for a few weeks as I have to learn PHP-upload...

Anyway, I feel like PHP-ing, haven't felt like it for a while.. :)
