View Full Version : Disrespect on the slopes?

Whenever I see a newschooler or snowboarder do something nice I complement them on it. The other day I saw an alpine snowboarder carving some unbelievable flat turns at 7 springs so I complimented him on his work. Yesterday a snowboarder did a back flip. I got talking with him and found out he had a gymnast background. Two weeks ago a twin tipper made a nice 360 when entering a steep run, so I told him it was nice move. In any case, newschooler or whatever I find if you are courteous to others it doesn't hurt. Maybe it also helps that I am a gray beard - they treat the young guys different, but I find little disrespect on the slopes. But who knows what they say behind my back? All I can focus on is what IS said and do not spend much time in the realm of imaginary discrimination...too busy trying to stay upright!

yea i hear that, i tend to get those "looks" from twin tippers, and i complement nice move too, but never seem to get any compliments in return, its like they would have to come down off a pedestol or something to compliment me.

I get less disrespect from other riders and more from staff, instructors and ski patrol. I was up at Monarch this weekend and most of the times my girlfriend and I got off (and sometimes when we got on) the lift, they slowed it down dramatically. We are both pretty darn good, and we never have problems with the lifts. They see the shorties and immediatelty assume we suck. One time, they slowed it down on purpose and it was just at the wrong moment and almost caused us to both wipe out on the ramp. P*sses me off! :-(
Additionally, we got yelled at by ski patrol for going too fast, when we were being passed by many other skiers and boarders. I'm convinced he saw the skiboards and was just trying to give us a hard time.

Well, I can't say much about your post since I am not that good of s skiboarder to deserve any compliments from anyone. But from what I see on the slopes it seems as you say. Although I did get one last week about riding fakie down a long hill on my Bigfoot 63's - but the compliment was from a guy in his 40's on traditional skis.
One shouldn't skiboard for compliments, although it is nice to get some if you deserve them. And if none come around you way, let your skiboarding speak for itself. Thoreau once noted that people inviting him to a dinner would get their pride from how expensive and fancy a meal that could provide. He said on the other hand, he got his pride from how simple a meal he could make. So, from Thoreau example be aware of where your pride is located and let your pride be in your riding and not in words.
As I posted this on another thread...
I don't think poor boyz prod helped with the twin tip ~ skiboard tensions when they showed some poor backward, disheveled skiboarder heading for an outhouse that gets blown up by some twin tippers. I first leaned about twin tippers from some of the old SB series of films. SB3 tales from the crew showed Mike Nick making the change to long twin tips. Lots of skiboard videos also showcase long twin tips, would be nice if the long twin tippers reciprocated sometimes instead of put downs to the short twin tips. Just a thought to the filmmakers. Twin tips are twin tips...they are just longer or shorter same as surfboards or kayaks.

Drink, did you take any of the Mirkwood Basin at Monarch? Also how was their park, and how would it compare with something along the line of Angel Fire's park. I'm planning on going there later this year, and if they're gonna be pricks to me I'm gonna have some fun around their mountain showing them what skiboards can do.

i get laughed at from the chairlifts sometimes, for no real reason, ill slide a box or something and i'll hear someone say something about my sexual orientation.
i did get props today tho from someone sitting up on the chairlifts after i did a trap rail.

I didn't hit Mirkwood this time. I plan to go back before the end of the season, though, and try it then. From what I understand, it is VERY extreme. 15-20 foot cliffs, deep pow, etc... Honestly, I wouldn't take anything under 99cm back there.
They have two parks. One has two boxes, ground-level rail, rainbow, etc... The other park has a couple of big air jumps and some larger park apparatus. And what's great is that the jumps are very close to the base, so you could land some big hits in full view of two lifts and the lodge.

Sick. If I hit Mirkwood when I go I will definately ride either my Canon M7's or Loken CT8's if I can get the cash up to snag a pair before I get there.

If I had any more room on my subi's windows I'd get sticker made of that. My last sticker said:
When Hell Freezes Over I'll Skiboard There Too!.

Overall, we are hated by the newschooler community. Twin-tippers, ski instructors, staffers and any serious extreme skiers hate us. Honestly I don't know why. They also hate snowboarders, but they need to understand if not for snowboarding and innovative sports like skiboarding, many ski resorts would be closed today. We pay the money that helps keep the mountain open for everyone. That's why we should never disrespect ANY form of snowsliding. Don't bite the hand that feeds you...
