Do the producers of sport films pay to use the music in the film? I'm talking about inline, skateboard, skiboard, twin tip, etc., vids and their respective sound tracks.

legally they are supposed to get permission from the artists/record label. to get permission they may have to pay or just ask. it usually depends on how popular the band is. i wondered the same thing when i saw mothers milk video magazine and it had songs from ozzy and kid rock, etc. i asked felix (the maker) about it when i saw him and he said "screw 'em. if they get upset about it they will tell me to stop making it and i already have. i only made one batch."

Ben would probably know better then I, but I was involved in some independent films a few years ago. Actually that's how I met my wife and no it wasn't porno! And I was the assistant director in charge of music and other things. I called some record labels and inquired about using their music and they said I had to contact the lawyers to figure out compensation. Well, we dropped it right there as we didn't have that kind of money and found a local musician that was more then happy to help.

Making my story short, yea I believe they do have to pay the music companies as they are reeping profit from the artists efforts.

i was told that as long as they are under a certain length, it's legal. i don't know the specifics though. my friend makes mix cd's (powerhourcd.com) with each song only 60 seconds and he said it's legal.

As far as I know, if its recognizable as a specific song, you have to have the label's permission. The artist has no say, and doesnt get anything out of it.
Usually, if you want a big name, you need to know somebody.
