View Full Version : Dyed my ski boots...
... cause i can do that sort of thing.
through intense power of suggestion i changed my ski boots from apple red to black. think they came out great. cost a whopping $6.00
used RIT fabric dye
here's the shell before:
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k150/whitedime/0419071357.jpg
all the buckles and stuff were grey...
after
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k150/whitedime/0419072314.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k150/whitedime/DSC_4142.jpg
so if you don't like the way your ski boots look... by all means, change it.

yo mark you just let them sit in that stuff and the plastic absorbed it? maybe you should put a how too. cause i have to change mine up there way to scuffed.
-I never knew you could dye plastic. paint yes but dye.
well all the scuffs will still be there... so will the logos and what not. but for the most part you just boil some water dump the dye in (use about 3 packets) and let the water cool for a few mins and dump the boots in for about 4-5 hours. done. depending on the intital color it may take shorter or longer.
can find the dye at supermarket or walmart , it' generally near the washing machine stuff.

+2 for mark on the excellent idea
Had a pair of ski boots I had given to me and well good boots but they were originally pink, here you can see the results of they dyeing process

That was a really good job.........Can't even tell they were red/pink. what was the water ratio???
Kirk S
04-21-2007, 07:37 PM
bout 5 gal. to almost a cup of liquid concentrate
look up RIT dye on google and check out there site
Kirk S

didn't get a before pic just imagine the pink on the liner all over the boots
as much dye and as little water as possible.
thisisjon
04-21-2007, 10:48 PM
so the logos and clips and what not get messed up at all?
yea logos are not affected.
I dyed all my buckles and hardware seperately, metal hardware will not be affected.
just take a blowgun or something after and blow all the water out of the bolts and what not so they don't get rusty.

i think some hot pink would have been much more gangstah mark
matthew
04-23-2007, 07:47 AM
im so makeing my boots from this season hot pink gaper boots
you can't really dye anything a lighter color, it will just take a slight tint but will be barely noticable. let the stuff sit overnight in the dye.

Do you reckon next seasons scuffs will show thru red? If it works on ski boots, will probably work on the boards too.
Kirk S
04-25-2007, 02:16 PM
scuff away my friend it dyes the plastic it pretty hard to scuff out dye
the longer you leave it in the dye,
the deeper into the material the dye will penetrate.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I really have been wondering about the younger generation and the impact of all of this.

Im fairly young, I can translate for you if you want Greco.
Most of my friends talk on the internet with all the crazy abbreviations and what not. I set up a plugin on my instant message program that changes their text to normal english (u- you, idk- i dont know) Its really nice being able to read things and not have to translate, I get enough of that with my japanese and mexican friends

thisisjon, you should download what is basically the new version of, Gaim has been updated and had to change their name and some stuff because of a lawsuit by AOL. The program is called pidgin now. Basically the same thing with a few minor tweaks and a different look to it. This goes for anyone who uses just about any IM program. Pidgin supports AOL, MSN, Yahoo, IRC, ICQ, and a few others that I don't remember exactly what they were. I find that gaim is just a better program than the aol messenger, and it doesn't have all the annoying ads.

yeah gaim is just better in my opinion. Im still waiting for Google and aol to work out a deal where they can talk to each other on an instant messager

Dye them white. It may take a few coats, but once it gets a light gray, then it'll be easier to make into a red (I think thats the colour you were trying to dye your boots to)

you CAN NOT dye stuff lighter
I feel pretty safe saying that
thisisjon

If a wall is painted black, you have to put on about 8 coats of white primer before you are going to get a semi true color of anything other than black
Kirk S
05-22-2007, 04:54 PM
painting is diffrent but you used the word DYE
painting I agree with you
thisisjon
05-22-2007, 04:57 PM
Im just saying painting and dying have similar aspects. Ive never actually attempted to dye my black skiboots, but I would assume after about 8 coats of white dye, the boots would be light enough to dye another colour
Kirk S
05-23-2007, 03:37 PM
not using the stuff we used
soak them in bleach for awhile then try some dye
hell idk
SkaFreak
05-23-2007, 06:00 PM
Wouldn't recommend using bleach. Bleach is a pretty strong chemical and could weaken the plastic in the boots.

After doing some research, vinyl dye, which works with plastics, should help you lighten up your skiboots. If you do about two or three coats with white vinyl dye, and then do what ever colour you want, it should turn out ok.

Does the dye degrade the plastic any???
winterparkrider
05-29-2007, 08:59 AM
I would almost be willing to bet that putting chems on plastic will weaken them even if its just a little. let us know what happens the first time you go big and land switch in them cause they might explode.be carful
thisisjon
05-29-2007, 10:49 PM
its not supposed to jack up the plastic because its only bonding with the pours of the plastic. But that doesnt mean that it wont or cant mess up the plastic, but altering your equipment at all is risky.
