well anybody that hits 70 footers doesnt really suck so i take that back but in every way the dude was f-ed got towed to fast and overshot the landing leaned to far back and could not correct he was doomed and im sure paid the price with some bruised or broken bones.... was definately a sweet attempt though im always looking for some sweet street transfers....

edit- not so sure thats really 70 feet either looks about 50.

It is a huge drop, but powder acts like an airbag that stunt men use. He definitely had to have some cajones to try that one, but it doesn't surprise me that he was able to ski out of it. I've a kid over rotate a backflip off of a 20-25+ foot cliff, land flat on his back on packed powder (real life, not video) and not have any problem getting up and skiing off.

yeah but thats an easy 150 foot drop bro....and if you look real close he does land on his head.

edit-I love how the powder goes poof when he lands.... lol

he set the world record with that one...245ft, head first....human missile!

Jamie Pierre has set a world-record cliff jump at the Grand Targhee Resort in Wyoming, dropping 245 vertical feet off the back of Fred's Mountain, and said he made his record-breaking jump on Wednesday as a way to spread the Christian word. "It wasn't some yahoo stunt,'' Pierre said. "I chose to do it so it would open up doors so I could witness my faith in Christianity.''
Pierre had been scoping the cliff for seven years, and finally found the right conditions to hit it. TGR was on site filming it, and measured the distance from the cornice to the landing hole with a range-finder to confirm the world record.
"This nothing that an average recreational skier or snowboarder should consider doing,'' she said Friday. Even for elite skiers, she said, ``we would never recommend anybody try this.''

World's biggest headplant in Grand Targhee

30 January 2006

[STOP PRESS: we now have an actual photo of this world-record cliff drop and confirmation that it is been re-measured to 255 feet]

Shane McConkey skis off enormous cliffs for fun. Shane McConkey is just about the leading extreme sports practitioner in the world. Yet Shane McConkey is sane (... kind of). Shane McConkey skis off these cliffs wearing a base-jumping parachute. He has a plan on how to land and ski away and, as his new ski-base Huck Doll is testament to, so far he has done so.

Jamie Pierre's world-record cliff jump
Jamie Pierre - Christian HuckerNot all extreme riders seem quite so grounded in reality. Natives brings you the story of Jamie Pierre's attempt on the world-record for the impression of a large brick. In fact it appears also to have been an evangelical attempt to test gravity. So here at Natives, we'll do our bit by spreading the Good News to all of you.

A Utah skier says he has set a world-record cliff jump at the Grand Targhee Resort in Wyoming, dropping 245 vertical feet off the back of Fred’s Mountain.

Evangelical cliff-huckerHuckers for Christ?
Jamie Pierre, 32, of Salt Lake City, announced on Friday 27 Jan that he made his record-breaking jump on Wednesday as a way to spread the Christian word. He has previously dropped 180 feet and said he had been calculating this jump and waiting for perfect conditions for years.

"It wasn’t some yahoo stunt," Pierre said. "I chose to do it so it would open up doors so I could witness my faith in Christianity." [

Seven Year's in Wyoming
Pierre said he had evaluated the jump for at least seven years before determining that his ability and conditions were right. Teton Gravity Research, a company that specializes in filming radical ski feats, measured the distance from the cornice to the landing hole with a range-finder to confirm the world record, he said.

The previous world record was set by Paul Ahern of New Zealand, who jumped 225 feet in 1995, according to an article in Skiing Magazine that mentions Pierre’s jumping exploits.

Jamie PierreTGR solemn, but cameras kept rolling
Five photographers and three cinema shooters recorded the event, said Josh Nielsen of Teton Gravity Research.

"It was a really, really heavy and intense experience for all of us," Nielsen said.

He said Pierre managed the event and that the others were "kind of along for the ride."

Observers were solemn before the jump, Nielsen said, adding that Pierre said a prayer before taking off and clocked four full seconds of air time.

World's biggest headplant!
Kevin Zacher shooting Jamie Pierre in EngelbergAbout 100 feet into the jump, Nielsen said Pierre couldn’t keep his skis under him and went upside down. He landed headfirst and blew a hole 6 feet deep into the snow.

Nielsen said a photographer rushed in and dug Pierre out of the snow.

"Jamie pretty much walked away with a cut lip," he said.

Pierre said he was lucky to be alive.

Pierre said he landed in the perfect spot. [Ed: ie on his HEAD!?]

"I hit the nail on the head," he said. "The fact that I came out unscathed and landed where I planned — faith played a role in it."

Pierre's family weren't too happy
Pierre said he took grief from his wife and parents for his jump. He was born in Minnesota and moved first to Crested Butte, Colorado, and then to Salt Lake City to ski.

Pierre works with his father as a custom furniture maker and for a lawn irrigation business.

Just in case you were thinking of trying it...
Susie Barnett-Bushong, spokeswoman for Grand Targhee, warned anyone against trying to duplicate Pierre’s jump.

"This is nothing that an average recreational skier or snowboarder should consider doing," she said Friday. Even for elite skiers, she said, "we would never recommend anybody try this."

In January 2005, skier Brent "Newt" Newton died after jumping off a 50-foot cliff at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Paul Ruff, a former world-record holder with a cliff jump of 110 vertical feet, died in 1993 on a 160-foot attempt.

If you're up for it, you should head down to Taos next year for the freeride comp. If you're able to launch 50ft cliffs, you'll do pretty well up there. I only saw 2 people take cliffs that were over 30ish in the time I watched. It's also sponsored by Salomon, so it would be a nice slap to the face to have a real skiboarder show up some of the skiers there.

I agree with Greco... have you never gone off a jump wrong? I'd like to see you try a 70+ booter where if you miss the landing there is nothing but icy concrete.

Exactly, didn't think so.

I always rock a helmet.and that comp at taos sound like fun send me the info at Brett@revel8skiboards.com...my try at the world record will be done on Berthoud pass in winterpark.my buddy jeff dropped the shelf which is 55 feet from drop point to snow depending on snow depth and the launch will be from the nitro rock.which is a 30 ft boulder with a natural upslope on the edge. I hit it last season with only a 10 yard in run and went all of 75 to 85 ft not measured but rode away easily on both attempts.next season we will measure and film. not that we didnt film it last year but fottage wont be released until the man sees fit .I have no control so please dont make a stink.and by the way two other skiers hit it and fell.

I actually still live with my parents for the summer (in college), and they might be kinda iffy about letting people they hadn't met just kinda show up and stay here. Also, I'm about 3 hours away from Taos, so you might want somewhere closer. Anyways, I'll see what I can do for you. If nothing I'll see if I can hook you up with some cheap lodging somewhere near Taos...which makes me think I may just have an idea, but I'll get back to you on that...

Rite on man .my mom was never cool with that , especialy after 7 of us showed up after a film trip. she wasnt to pleased with me.but there is alot of time befor then..do you have a link to check out the comp.or where I could see last years footage.I think I saw somthing on one of those amazing video shows where a guy crashed and broke hmself on a tree and had to have his spleen removed.

SkaFreak

Here (http://skitaos.org/freeride/) is a link to all of the info that they have up. It's all from last years comp, but they have photos, video, and results from the comp. The second guy in the video who gaps those rocks took second (he also took about 3 other smaller cliffs on that run, and rode more of the mountain than any other rider there). The guy who took first took a pretty gnarly route through some nasty rocks that led to a pretty big (could estimate size from how far away I was) cliff that had an ugly top, but a pretty nice landing.

Just wathed some video from the comp. if those were the best they have in NM those boys are in some serious trouble when I show up. I have a very unique style of riding deep snow and landing big drops on my skiboards. They may not let me win but I cant almost predict a top 5 finish. if I dont muff it it up.

SkaFreak
05-30-2007, 11:57 AM
Like I said, the guy who took first isn't on the video, and the competition is based off of a whole run, not just one drop. The judging criteria is line, control, fluidity, style, and aggressiveness. I have no doubt that you could do well, but that video doesn't quite do the competition justice. They might be holding back on the good footage a bit to release on a DVD, although in real life, that second clip in the video was amazing to watch.
