So toward the end of last season I was out on my skiboards at Winter Park for only the 2nd time. (In fact, I met Adam up there that day - March 4th)
Anyway, I was getting pretty comfortable and thought I'd try my first rail. It was only about a foot off the ground, so I thought it would be a good trial run.
As luck would have it, I took a major digger and ended up breaking my leg something fierce. (Surgery with a rod inserted in my leg, screws to hold everything together, the whole 9-yards... yeah, fun times)
- For the record, I think the board got caught under the rail when I ate it. I doubt the fall alone would have done such a number on my leg - but it all happened so fast, I can't be sure.
So this got me thinking... Should I plan to switch over to releasable bindings?
I plan to take it very easy next season and not try rails again anytime too soon.
I've read all the warnings about the bindings and accepted the risk, but is this type of injury a lot more common than I originally thought?
My wife has a similar pair and I really, REALLY don't want her going through the same thing. She is a very conservative skiboarder. No tricks, no jumps, she mainly likes the fact that they are so easy to manuever.
Aside from the safety factor, are there any other pros to getting releasable bindings? The extra cost would have made up for the medical bills 20 times over.
- Thanks for any thoughts/opinions.
(And no need to call me a dumb-ass for my fall - I already know that. ;) )
