I haven't used it, but I've had my eye on this one -

Wal-mart sells an iron for around $6.00.
You can't beat that for the price. And if it ever breaks down (hardly, all it does is get hot) you can get another one.

Any iron is good, i found the best ones are the pocket/travel ones which don't have the holes under.

The temp setting is why I'm looking at the pricey iron. With a cheaper iron you have to guess at it. I'd be a little nervous since I have no experience with hot wax, so the one temp setting is appealing even at that price. While it's cheap to replace the iron, it's not so cheap to replace your boards!

i was told by some one on another post "Get the iron up to temperature, and melt a little wax onto the base of the iron. If it smokes, it is too hot."

Exactly, temperature is not really an issue. As long as the wax doesn't smoke it's all good.
The higher the temperature is the easier waxing will be, so to maximize your effort heat up the iron as much as you can but prevent the production of smoke.
