Well...I now have my first outing of the season under my belt. I took a trip out to Mount Southington in Plantsville CT yesterday and spent the whole day there. It was only about an hour drive and 35 bucks for an all day ticket. With a vertical drop of only about 500 feet, it's not exactly Vermont...but it was good enough to keep me amused from 9 to 5. The only issues I had with the place was that they only have two lifts that are slower than death warmed over, a double and a triple. So the lines got a little crowded toward the end of the day. A five minute lift ride gave me a run that was a little less than two minutes long the way I was bombin' down that hill. But the snow wasn't bad for Connecticut, and I'm not about to complain for 35 bucks.

My first run was made while still brushing off the dust from sitting out last season with a broken wrist, and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was able to get back in the groove. I managed not to eat any snow all day, so I'm fairly pleased with myself. I was a little disappointed that the terrain park wasn't open yet, but it looked like they'd made some pretty good progress in making snow. A bunch of boarders did construct a kicker on one hill, but they made it so huge and steep that I didn't really feel too comfortable hitting it just yet. I'd rather start small until I'm sure I could land it. Wuss? Yeah.

I heard a few whispered comments in the lift line behind me about how I'd apparently "put my skis in the dryer and they shrank" and "how the rental shop must've run out of real skis". I didn't even bother giving them a piece of my mind. I watched those same two boarders flounder and fall on their asses on the very same trail that I was ripping up no problem. Revenge is sweet. But I also heard some stuff from up on the lifts like: "Hey, check that guy out." and "Wow, that looks like fun." My favorite though had to be, "Dad, I wanna try those." And of course, every time I rode the lift with someone, my boards ended up becoming the topic of conversation. I don't think I actually got anyone interested, but if nothing else, they know what the sport is all about now.

Anyway. It was a good day. I plan on going up there more often this season, so if anyone feels like going up with me, let me know! Later.
