So my guide for the day is Jjue. He says 'Just follow me' and leads me over the lip into a real steep powder tree run at Squaw. He is about 50 yds ahead when suddenly the slab I am skiing across starts to slip. I shout 'Hey Jack, is this supposed to be happenin?' He just says 'Ride it out man, you will be fine'
OOOOOOOOOk!
Hey Jeff, those 120s can even ski avalanches! :D

Out of curiousity, how much actually slid, or was it basically just sluffing?

Jack, did you happen to catch Valmorel's avalanche ride on video?

Yeah , just sluff , nothing dangerous ... :)!

we had a most fabulous day today , mid week at squaw is great , really cuts down on the crowds , upper mountain closed and fabulous pow in the trees , and nice cut up pow on KT 22 ..

we rode with Slow and his wife Maria , Wendell and his skier friend Craig ..
Slow , Wendell , Craig and I had a wonderful run in pow down the face of KT2 ,

meanwhile I was trying to take valmorel to his limits in my kind of terrain . ( by the way , he doesn't have any -limits I can find,.. a true master on the 120 ,nothing I can do on the Sherpa even in very deep steep pow , that he can't do on the 120 ).. I found out that this kind of deep pow was new to him as tree pow riding isn't really common in the alps . thank god it wasn't all steep icy moguls , or I am sure he would have schooled me for sure. . .. we found some great untracked and lightly tracked terrain off the usual runs ..

I do agree my guiding abilities however , might cause one to question the guide .. when the guide cuts the slope ahead of you and you have to slide away in the sluff ! but probably the coup de grace" was when I led valmorel on to a big cliff in the deep pow and the only way down was sliding down a little very steep chute that was just about Sherpa length wide .. just couldn't throw a turn in there .. I know, you , ska freak , would have just bombed it .. I led the way sliding down the chute side slipping on my butt :)!

great times had by all ... !
Back to squaw tomorrow .. hopefully they will get the upper mountain open and we can get in some more pow runs !

no , no vid .. we were having too much fun riding .. and I think I FINALLY
found some terrain at Squaw valley that Valmorel felt it might be sketchy riding behind me holding a digital camera and not concentrating on the terrain below us :)!

In light of recent events, I figured I would dig up this thread as a reminder for everyone to stay safe. Yesterday a patroller at Squaw was killed in an avalanche while doing control. He was ski-cutting a slope that they had bombed and couldn't get a release, and a freak class 4 took him through the strainer, died of blunt trauma injuries. This season has been crazy snowpack, so stay safe inbounds, and even safer to those who venture out.

Yes Skafreak , snow falling like crazy here in Tahoe with both major roads closed this am .. and freaky avalanche risk like we hardly ever see around here .... we will all be extra careful around here...

also a reminder that the Patrol risk their lives to try to keep our resorts safe for us to ride....
those of us who have just ridden Squaw Valley at Shredfest know personally what the terrain is like and our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the patrolman who lost his life

No definite plans yet ....... there has been some talk of doing Tahoe again , or Colorado.... Unfortunately , our fearless leader and organizer, Pinkkid is laid up in hospital right now ....
