I was coming to stop at the very end of a blue run, in the slow zone, getting ready to just make a turn and butter around to wait for True and Paul... not too sure what happened but I looked down and that left leg/ski was not moving and I tried like heck, as I always do when I fall, to get my legs up... but I couldn't... it was too late and I pretty much watched, listened, and felt my leg break. I knew I did something bad and motioned my husband and brother to get over here quick and get my boot off. I said that we are done for the day and I'm for the season and I'm sorry this has happened to ruin such a good day! My brother Paul skied just feet away to the lift operator for help to come. Husband True tended to me until help arrived shortly. The fall happened about 1:30pm Sunday March 2nd at Sierra Summit near chair 4 off Ulman's Alley(where I had just come off a easy wide tabletop box too!) during a fabulous fun day that we were so not ready to end. My feet felt great and my BWP's were sliding sweetly. At 4:15pm the ambulance took me down the mountain to the city hospital arriving there about 5:40pm. Around 11:30-midnight we were able to head home and arriving home about 2am. The following morning, Monday, I was on the phone getting arrangements made; 1pm Dr appt followed by 7pm surgery where the titanium rod and screws were inserted. I stayed in the hospital until Thursday afternoon and cannot put any weight on my leg yet still. I go back to Dr Wed. Broken Tibia & Fibula, yep both bones... it doesn't take going down steeps or hauling butt or having a spectacular crash... it can just happen going slow or even standing in a lift line(Arnold Schwarzenegger), with or without release bindings. It's a risk we all take in this wonderful winter sport, as in other sports too or just walking across the street. Skiboarding is a pasion, long or short boards release or non release, doesn't matter... Skiboarding is freedom. So now.... everyone is taking care of me and running the house and caring for my son as I gain strength and mend each day. My son turned 3 today too, we still had a great weekend for him too! He's not too sure what's going on but is doing his best to understand and help fix mommy's leg with his new toy drill!!! LOL He's always fix'n something!

Here are two videos from off out helmet cam's... nothing spectacular, but two different camera angles;

My Helmet cam:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hAOsXLR2g_A&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hAOsXLR2g_A&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

True's Helmet cam:

Once again, never ever thought it'd be me coming down on the stretcher being pulled by a snowmobile, I don't get hurt, I'm careful... well it happened, life goes on it is what it is, it could have been worse and there are others worse off.
Enjoy the pix! I decided not to post the surgery cut and stitches.

Happy birthday to your son!

And jeez, you weren't kidding about a slow moving fall. I can't really even tell what you did there.

By the way, what was the ambulance bill? I know one day I'll end up paying it, and I want to know how much I need to have set aside.

pinkkid , thanks for posting all this stuff .. that is a damn bad break for a slow moving , nothing type of fall , ... as you say , . just shows that sh....t happens , for no particular reason ...
a skier friend of mind broke his leg bad and was out a whole season just walking in the parking lot and slipping and falling wearing his ski boots on a patch of ice...

I hope that this bad luck , does not hurt your enthusiasm for the sport and that you will be back next season ... your bright spirit and enthusiasm for skiboarding is fabulous ... tahoe shredfest would not have happended if not for your joy about the sport and your desire to get folks together and all of us who attended are indebted to you for making the event happen ..

take care and best wishes for a rapid recovery ... happy birthday to your son as well !!!

ps .some of the you tube vids don't show . although Trues helmet cam showing the fall does... ( the other vids are marked as private ) maybe you can edit the options to "share with public"

Thanks again for taking the time to post all this , I really enjoyed meeting you and True and Kevin and riding with you guys at Shredfest ...

Am I correct in saying that it looks like your leg broke right above the boot? If that was the case, that was an amazing fluke. Really hope you heal soon Pink, good luck.

haven't got the bill yet, hopefully insurance will cover some of it. But the resort workers said $1,600!!!!!!! If you don't need the ambulance don't bother but I did need it.

I know, I'm so erked I really dunno what happened, just a dumb fall.

Shelly,

Having broken my leg also, my fall is really etched in my mind. That twisting snap was a really horrible memory. In my case, a release binding would definitly have saved my leg. It is amazing that True caught it all on the helmit cam. I watched your fall many times. It looks like your left board tip jammed as you went forward in a twist resulting in the break. It looks like a release binding might have helped, but it would have needed to be set to release on a light fall considering your slow speed. I have seen friends get hurt on skis on light falls with release bindings that didn't release. They didn't break bones, but pulled knees and ham strings hard enough they couldn't ski the next day. What a bit of bad luck. That leg will heal and I hope quickly. I hope it doesn't damp your spirit for this sport. Thanks for posting the footage of the fall. I am interested in how people get hurt with this sport as this knowlege hopefully will keep me safer. Happy birthday to your son.

damn shelly! That sure was a easy fall...hard break. i did watch it a few times and it just baffles me how such a fall can do that. anyways, it seems like your doing good despite the injury, and also happy birthday to your son:) nice pic of him on skiboots:D. if you don't mind me a asking, are you considering getting a releasables? i know you could still be hurt either way but as for me,my releasables has save me numerous times on my falls. last sunday,"the last run of the day" i was cruising down on the green run to the main base, about 200 yards from it i ALWAYS take that one little corner trail where there is a little jumps. so as i headed that way, theres a little zigzag run before the jump,as i scrub down on speed, i did not see this tiny rock sticking out which i hit sideways with my tail end and i went flying and did a somersault and landed on my side. my bindings release me from my board(again) which i'm really greatful that it does cuz that would have been ugly if it did not. funny thing though, about a minute prior to my fall, somebody else hit the rock too:D but enough about me, you take care and heal fast. btw, what brand of boots were you wearing? they look like dalbello's.

Yep boots are Dabello's! A nice eggplant color for us girls ;)

Ya know what... I AM probably gonna switch to release... once you actually do break something and never thought it'd happen to ya...... you get a wake up call. If it was up to my mom and some others, they'd never have me ski again. Duno if I can do that, but seeing my family dig in and really help me out by taking time off their work and lives to take care of me makes think I shouldn't ski again since the risk is there and I'd hate for all of us to go through all this again! We'll see what happens, I have too much passion and fun with skiboarding to quit, but I also love my family and respect them and don't wanna come off selfish when I do hit the slopes again.

Shelley,

If your family loves you like you say they do, they shouldn't expect you to give up something that you love. I told you about my neck injury. I never once considered giving up shredding after it happened. Skiboarding is one of the few activities in life that brings me true joy. I'm not giving it up for anything or anyone.

Like jjue said, that's some impressive hardware. Don't forget to get your card from the doc that will get you out of trouble when you set off the metal detectors at airports. Got mine. :D

Didn't think about that (to get the card for airports.... good thinking)!
I am looking at longer boards with release bindings for riding when I get back to the slopes. We'll see.

My vote: If you love it and don't want to stop, then don't give up on it.

Your next major injury could just as easily come from riding your atv or stepping out of your vehicle onto an icy driveway. Are you going to stop doing those things as well?

There is no doubt about it ... snowriding can lead to serious injury or even death (tree wells, avalanches, running into a tree, being taken out by another rider). We had a skier killed on Mt. Hood a few years ago when a snowbaroder smacked him in the head with his board while flying off a jump back onto the groomed run.

However, statistics tell us you're far more likely to suffer serious injury or death driving on a two-lane undivided highway.

Hey everyone! Boy I sure wish we could come to Tahoe this year and at least see everyone again, but no can do.. ad we usually can one or two trips to Tahoe each year. Oh well. The bone has healed! All the muscle, nerves, tissue, ligaments etc are still healing and where the incision was... and that is what is taking so long UGH! Even if we could come up to Shredfest I would not be able to hit the slope yet.. well maybe a buny hill but I'll wait till the leg is strong enough and also the mental aspect of it all. We'll continue to plan Shredfest Events though!
