If I'm going to make the 19hr drive out there, you better believe I'm going to stay for both days.

If I had someone to split the 19hr drive with I'd consider it. Anyone from Montreal area (QC, ON, VT) in for this?
if you make it to Western NY we may be able to figure something out.

Yes - all info is in the first and second post on the first page so you don't have to look through all the posts.
I'm down for riding two days and may be bringing another person who would also ride both days.

Good to hear so many are interested in both days. I only ask because Bohemia told me about a promo they are doing. Buy 3 season passes get the 4th free, all have to be new season pass holders. Here's the kicker, one day every december they put passes on sale for $99. So if we get groups of 4 to buy them, we buy 4 season passes for $300. Making it roughly $75 per person plus a few small fees. That's $25 cheaper then just buying two individual days at $49 each day.
This is why I asked. I'll post more info soon, but we need to register for it ahead of time and then pay for it that day. This is gonna be sweet, a season pass will make its value back and then some over one weekend. BEST SEASON PASS EVER!

Sounds like a good deal, let's do it.
I'm willing to buy 4 on my credit card, and then the 3 others can just paypal me the money later. If it's after the 5th of december, I'll have until January 30th to pay it without incurring any fees, so that would allow some of you more time to get your cash together.
And I get amazon points, i love amazon points

This is the only image of them I can find on the web, it doesn't do them justice. Like G said, probably not a good idea to ride them, not safe, but that doesn't mean we can't mess around with them!

I was hoping to go to this meet, but it looks like I won't be able. I thought there was a good chance that I'd be moving back to the Twin Cities, but the job opening that I was hoping to fill never materialized. Oh well, looks like I'll have to settle for Shredfest II instead.Put me back on the maybe list. I might be moving back to the Twin Cities after all. I'll know more tomorrow. Just watched some vids on YouTube of Mt. Bohemia. It looks like a fun place. Check out this clip. It's great! :D
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zf9VXkCpRjk&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zf9VXkCpRjk&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I read on the Mt. Bohemia website that they do no grooming. That could be mighty tough on those who don't have longer/wider boards for powder riding.

We'll organize the 4 group deals as we get closer, probably in the next week or two. It's the first week of December we need to be registered by, so when I get a chance later this week, I'm in Detroit on business right now, I'll start organizing it.
The cabins we are staying in are hill side. If you go to Mt Bohemia's site there are pics on there of them. Nothing special, just bunks, but it's only $27/night based on 4 per cabin.
I hope we end up with exactly even numbers, but it probably won't happen. So my vote would be to spread out the cost across everyone, so we don't have some paying 27 and others paying 40 because they have less in their room.

I'd like to be put on the "maybe" list pending a few things.
1) Ride. We dont get much snow down here in cincy so the car i drive is not suited for it. I can make the trip up to northern ohio just fine however, the long haul i fear my little sports car would get me killed should i run into some weather.
2) Not a beginner's mountain. While i dont consider myself a beginner, it does concern me as to what the difference between my definition of beginner and their definition of beginner is.
Money and committment arent an issue for me.
So far i've read that Bec is picking up GOM in Akron. Is there a free seat for me and my things or are you guys full? I've got my boards, clothes, some MREs, and couple 12 packs since it seems bars are few and far from what i've read thus far. I usually pack everything into one large tupper so its not all loose, however i can do w/e.
Shaggy, i heard you mention that you live in sandusky. How is your car pool situation?

I'll add you to the maybe list Mavrick.
As far as the beginner statement.. the mountain is all powder/trees. There are no groomed trails so you just do your thing, cut through trees, and enjoy the powder. If you haven't ever ridden powder before or don't feel comfortable riding in the trees this may not be the best place to ride. I'd suggest working on tree and powder riding if possible before the event, just so you have a taste of what it'll be like.
Hope that helps. We'd love you to join us. :)

I'm going to post this in both the threads regarding Mt. Bohemia. Me and my friend are CONFIRMED going to Mt. Bohemia the weekend of December 18 or 19-21st and also March 4-9 (yeah 4-9, you heard correctly, and that's NOT including driving times.) My birthday is March 4th so 5 days of skiboarding heaven is going to be my birthday present. Anyways. Here is the new information, and I hope everyone who needs a ride will see this. I can have a car with room for up to 7 people PLUS gear driving to and from Mt. Bohemia on BOTH weekends me and my friend plan to go.
Now, because I don't really mind driving too much, I am willing to drive up to 50-75 (maybe more if you convince me?) miles out of my way in any direction along the way to pick someone up. On top of that, I will be planning to drive to Wasau, WI, and then from there head straight north to Mt. Bohemia on both trips. This may be good for whoever is interested, because you could drive to Wasau and then carpool the rest of the way with me. I know there are alot of people coming from the Ohio area, idk if anyone is interested in carpooling with me from Wasau on up on either trip. All I ask is that anyone who rides with me spots me for gas. On the December trip me and my friend will plan to sleep in the back of my SUV, unless something better comes up or whoever car pools with me wants to spot for a cabin/hotel/whatever. On the March trip we will be down to pay our fair share for a cabin.
Anyways. I dont know what I'm forgetting but... /end speech.

Gohammer I may take you up on that, but I won't be going up that early for the March weekend, so I may not. I'll have to see. I live about an hour and a half SE of Wausau, so it's not far for me at all.
Anyway, guys and girls it's time to get your groups together for the 4 packs. You should run on over to the link GOM posted or head to www.mtbohemia.com and check out the info there about the 4 packs of season passes.
Lets get some groups together so we can get the passes for cheaper.
I'm a free agent right now so I need a group. Who else needs a group?

Actually I'd disagree. If anything it's gotten more people to commit. Had we done it at say Granite Peak in Wausau WI or Lutsen in MN I doubt many of the east coast guys would be as excited to come. Neither of those hills offer much of a challenge, while both really nice and I like to ride both, they don't offer the powder and challenge that Bohemia will.

My thoughts parallel Brian's. I'd still be interested in attending the meet just to ride with a bunch of others from the forum, but I wouldn't be nearly as excited if not for the conditions I'm expecting. Both Jay and Bohemia are a long drive (Bohemia is twice the distance), but they also both offer riding conditions not normally available to most of us on the east coast.

I know this is rather long, but it is necessary to read. We need to ensure everyone attending the event is on the same page. Again, if you're planning on coming please take the time to read and understand this.
These quotes are taken from the discussion of Jay Jam 09. I feel it applies to this trip as well since we will be riding trees and powder. The difference here is that this resort is 100% trees and powder. There are no normal groomed runs at all.
I have seen way too many people ride beyond their abilities. It is fine to push yourself but you also need to know your limits. This becomes problematic in groups if you feel like the only one not doing something. People will follow the herd and give it a try, even if they know it could be a bad idea. If a rider will not be able to keep up, they will be asked to not enter the woods. This is not negotiable. Beyond the threat of a tree attacking you, there is the greater danger of getting lost. If you can't keep up and fall behind, it is easy to become lost or disoriented and you could wind up deep in the woods. I have been in the woods yelling for my friends only to hear dead silence because the snow covered tress muffle sound. I have been very close to my friends and still could not hear because of the snow in the trees. Also, some areas are not marked well and even if you follow another persons tracks, it could lead far beyond the resort area. Out of bounds riding is fine. When you are expecting it and know where you are going. If you get separated and do make it out of the woods. It is a LONG walk back, uphill, to the resort
While it is a far cry from a true backcountry excursion, many of the same dangers exist. We just want everyone to fully understand the reality of woods skiing. If you are a competent rider, you will be fine. If you find yourself not being confident, bad stuff can happen.
For example, everyone has a favored turning side. When trying to slow down from a high speed, turning left for some is a more natural, or safe feeling. For others, they may feel safer turning right. This is fine on wide open groomers but the woods dictate your direction. If the trail curves left, but you are more comfortable turning right, you're going to get into trouble. The woods will not always give you options you are comfortable with and the more you have to think about your actions, the more distracted you can get. Know your limitations and all will be good.
Again, not looking to scare anyone, Just want people to manage their expectations and understand the potential risks. :)
Since the event is toward the end of the season, you have a lot of time to work on your riding. If at all possible we suggest that you get some powder / tree riding experience in before we head to Bohemia. When the time comes and the event is a month away - you need to know where you are in terms of skill level. If you aren't feeling completely confident that you can handle riding this type of terrain, it's best that you don't attend. We want everyone to have fun and not have to worry about getting lost, keeping up, or getting hurt.

Here's something else everyone should consider if they have the option, bring a radio or two. I will be bringin 3 or 4 but I can't cover everyone also bring some batteries, I got separated last year at jay from the much better riders than myself and kind of regretted not having a radio to tell the others that I was fine.
When you get separated, the best option is to stay where you are if there is someone behind you or head back on up to the run that you just came from and head back on down to the lodge, with any luck you will run into someone else from your group and make sure they know you are okay. If you do know that there is a run straight down the hill you can continue down hill but there are certain risks that are involved with this method such as getting to a run that is too diffiucult or not actually being where you think you are. "Ride at your own risk" means exactly what it sounds like but it doesn't mean don't do things to make your own risk even riskier.
SO TO RECAP:
Ride at your own risk and try to keep up with the group
Bring a radio if you come
Just be safe

From my house to:
Mount Bohemia Ski Resort
Lac La Belle Road
Lac La Belle, Michigan
- Google maps says 9 hours 8 minutes. I thought it said 300 miles before but now I'm seeing 411 miles. This is going up 35 to Duluth then east.
- Mapquest is giving me the same route but saying 7 hours 50 minutes and 413 miles.
Going through Wausau is 9 hours 38 minutes / 412 mi according to google maps and 8 hours 20 minutes / 429 miles according to mapquest.

It's giving me all kinds of different routes and times. The first time I routed it, on mapquest, from my house in Minnetonka to Wasau then Lac La Belle it said 354 miles and 5 hours and 11 minutes. Then it said 10 hours when I routed it again. Than it said 9 hours. I finally have it at 8 hours and 56 minutes with 454 miles. Through Wasau. Damn mapquest.

Thanks for posting that Courtney. I knew when we went to Jay in February that I may be over my head in the trees having never done it before. I was over my head, but tried it and it was alright, just had to take my time.
If you haven't done trees before don't be completely scared away. You can hang out with me and we can taker easy. Like Ian said at Jay, 'let the kids go, us old guys can't keep up'. I'm in that group. I'm an old guy who couldn't keep up, but I still had a good time.
Just make sure you are ready to work. Powder + trees equal very tired legs.
Oh and the trees at Bohemia appear to be a little more spread out then those at Jay. Jay was nuts how you couldn't see crap. That's what made me so tentative, Bohemia doesn't seem to be so packed with trees. They really look to clear it out so you have more then 2 inches of room to turn, haha. :)

Yeah man, I was stunned at how much I had to stop or fall just to be able to get my bearings again...I think I'm more prepared for this time though. There is no way that I will have much of a problem at Bohemia in the trees. Lots of pushing branches out of the way at jay.

I agree. At Jay we cut through some really, really thick stuff to find that untracked powder. Upper MI is definitely different and I don't think it will be nearly as intense. If you've never ridden any powder you may be in for a surprise because it definitely is a work out.

Good call, Courtney. I can remember the first time I ever rode trees in powder, and I was completely wiped out. I was on EMP's at the time, but even with bigger boards like the Condors, powder can be very taxing on your legs, especially if you get bogged down in a big drift and have to climb out. What makes Bohemia more of a challenge is the fact that there aren't groomed runs to pop out onto. I know that if I was feeling whipped on a run at Jay, I'd cruise down a groomer for the rest of the run or even for a couple runs to recouperate. We won't have that option at Bohemia. I'm planning on using the Jay Jam to measure how well I can handle the powder and see if my skills have improved. If I'm not satisfied, I figure that I have about a month to improve before Bohemia.
I agree with GOM on the radios. There was a lot of discission last year befoe Jay about radios, but then only a few people actually brought them. I'm planning on picking up a set myself forJay and Bohemia, so I'll have one extra, but I'd encourage others to also invest in a set as well.

I'm going back down home today, I will check the radios and tell everybody how many I have that work, and I too would recommend grabbing a set just so if you're ever at an event that I'm not at then you will have one too.
Be sure to give your cellphone number to the people you are carpooling with and others as well. I say this because there were some issues at jay jam last year with communication but it wasn't really bad at all. I would say just post your numbers up here but I don't know if everyone is comfortable doing that. If anyone really needs mine I will post it up, just tell me.

From what I remember from the last time I was in Upper MI the cell service wasn't too bad. There were dead spots but not nearly as bad as Jay. This all depends on what provider you have of course.. Still, since cell service isn't always guaranteed I agree on the radios.
I believe I have 2. They're pretty old but should do the trick. Even if we could have 1 radio for every 2 people that wouldn't be so bad. We'd just have to pair up so every pair has one radio just in case.

Wow this isn't at all what I was expecting out of the UP but I'm still really excited...I got two radios I use for hunting that I think are pretty good that I will bring. I've never really rode any powder and I have been thinking about possibly getting new boards anyways. I got BWPs right now and I'm 6'2" 180. Any recommendations that might help with the powder. I know I won't be riding powder that often but something that might be good for the powder and groomed runs for my normal riding.

Krupper, for your size the BWP's will be a workout in any decent powder. It's very doable, but you'll be very tired. The Revolt, KTP, ALP, and Condors are all very good options for you. The Condors obviously have the most float and are a blast in powder, but they are also definitely less nimble than they others. I've never ridden the ALP's, but I imagine that they'll be a good compromise between the Condor and the KTP's and Revolts. The overall float of the KTP's is very good, but I found that the stiffness meant that they needed to be ridden from the back. The extra inserts will help with that. The Revolts are one of my favorites. They do well all over the mountain, and they'll give you a great ride on any groomers. I doubt you'll be disappointed with any of them, but I will say that the Condors are the most extreme.

Hey I just read through this last page, I was reffered to this thread from the bohemai thread. I can answer a couple question about the mountains. I live a half hour from both the porkies and bohemia. The cell service at bohemia saturday was minimal so I would definitly suggest having a 2-way radio for both driving and skiing (I have 2 of my own). If you're bringing a radio, make sure to test it at some good distances before relying on it for safety.
Looking at the trees, the range is going to be drastically reduced. Even worse if we have a steady snow fall.
I'll be bringing a UHF handheld (covers the FRS and GMRS frequencies).

Courtney, what is the cost per person and when are you looking for payment?
Courtney

All the costs are in the second post of this thread. Andrew reserved our cabins and he'll organize some sort of payment later on, probably through paypal.
In the last week Bohemia has received 25 inches of snow.

Good Afternoon all! I have sent most of you a private message about the Midwest Meet. If you did not recieve one from me, please send me one and let me know if you are confirming. I need to figure out the lodging prices and how much we will each need to pay for the two nights.
I am also asking about doing a raffle or shirts of some sort. Shirts will probably be about $10 each. So let me know on that. Also if we do a raffle we may need to each chip in like $20 bucks to get a set of boards for someone to win. Thoughts on that?
Thanks, Andrew
PS- Right now with 13 confirmed, if they are all correct on the first post, it will cost each of us around $68 + tax and paypal fees for two days. If we get a few more, obviously that goes down.

Here's a picture I took from Google of the base of Bohemia's operations. It looks like there are 2 cabins on either side of the main cabin. So if we get closer to 16 people we would have all the cabins to us. That'd be sweet!

I'd like to start taking payment for the lodging. As of right now we have 9 confirmed without Shaggy or Gohammer and friend. If they confirm up we'll have 12 and fill up 3 cabins. We have a few more that are still not for sure on it yet, so we may get even more. But for now I'd like to start collecting.
As it stands, 3 cabins for 9 people comes to $75.57 total for the two nights per person. This does not include shirts or anything else. The price could go down the more people we have confirming up, but we can't wait forever.
If it turns out we get more we could use the extra money for shirts, maybe we'll do a raffle, you could get a refund, or I could hold it for food. We can decide that later.
I have two payment options below, this is also in post number 2 on this thread. One payment for most of you, and a second option for Courtney, GOM and krupper, as I owe them each $25, so I'm just going to give them a lower option for payment. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
Also if you'd rather just send it via paypal to my email you can do that too, altrealitygames@yahoo.com is my paypal email address.

I would need to have your lodging amount, $75 by the 15th of February. I currently have 4 cabins rented, that can fit 4 in each. So 16 spots. I need to cancel any hotels we don't use a few weeks before so I don't get charged $110 per cabin as a late cancel fee. If I don't cancel in time I get charged, so I don't want that to happen. I just hate for anyone to have to drive up that far by themselves. Maybe GOM and Maverick can ride up together or something. Packing 4 in one and then 1 in another is ok, just boring for the 1, and then he has to pay all the gas himself.
DennisEvans

I told Mavric that we'd ride up together and I forgot that, what we could do thoughs is a multi car pool that way if we find that we need more space for more people in a specific vehicle we have another vehicle to use as well.

Oh and I also need to know if anyone plans on dropping small cliffs while we're there. I'm trying to form a small group or something so that we are safe if we plan to drop at all. DO NOT DROP if you don't have someone checking the landing for you, while you can do it yourself it is a safety issue.
CrazyBoy-1
02-01-2010, 06:49 PM
A multi-car pool sounds like a good idea to me. We can put more stuff in the car with two people if need be. The only possible issue would be timing. Brick and I are planning on driving straight through from my place, and I don't know when we'll be passing by the Akron area. We can maybe look at that when we're at Jay?

Hey guys, this is the shirt design we put together. You have 20 colors to choose from. You can get as many shirts as you want. Shirts will be priced at $9.00, as long as we get at least 7 made. The more shirts ordered, the cheaper each shirt costs. Any left over money will be used to purchase food and beverages for everyone.
Here is a larger preview of the design on white (http://www.thisiscourtney.com/MWM/MWMwhite.jpg), and black (http://www.thisiscourtney.com/MWM/MWMblack.jpg).

As I'm sure many of you have seen, GOM said Camelbaks are cheap at Walmart. I just checked it out, and they definitely are. I'm going to have to pick up one of these for the Meet. Riding powder and trees makes you thirsty.

Looks like the "Hands-free bottle adapter sold separately", but they also have other options.

I'm still trying to work this whole thing out. If I grab a flight, any chance someone can snag me from the airport.

That would depend on which airport :) I know adeehr is driving up alone from Chilton, WI. I'd suggest talking to him and seeing about a flight into Green Bay, WI.

It'll be worth it. Plus, aren't you carpooling with ElkCloner?
I spent over 25 hrs in the car to Jay, and over 25 hrs back. You can do it :)
