I love how they call it his secret halfpipe when most of the skiing community knew precisely where it was and questioned Silverton for letting him build it there.

Heard about the secret halfpipe too. Silverton's a pretty cool town, but almost dead in the winter, there were only about 3 resturants open when I was there in march compared to the 25ish in the summer. Hope to make it up to silverton ski area later this winter after I work on my skills a little more.
Too bad that it was only snowboarding that was able to develop some new things there.

(if you like rum they have their own distillery in town, Montanya, it's good)

first i've heard of it. what was the controversy?

People were accusing him of being elitist

I dunno, if you have the money, or a sponsor willing to do it, what's wrong with your own halfpipe?

Basically, Silverton was a grassroots, semi-backcountry area. They had 1 lift, and a heli that was an extra cost. In the early days, it was guided only, but afte a while, they opened a small portion of the mountain to unguided runs. Shawn White came in, got them to blast the avalanche chutes to put more debris on the runout of a part of the mountain to build the halfpipe. Basically, the heart of the matter was that a lot of people felt that Silverton was selling out, and that there was no good reason for them to build a pipe there. They had to fly in the cutter, etc. when they could have built it in a more easily accessible area.

cash rules the ski and snowboard industry. Just ask line and espn about why they dropped skiboarding from the X-games , it wasnt because skiboarding had the biggest X-games venue in history with skiboarding slopestyle 1998..All ther big ski companies had more money for the comp time slots than skiboarding could afford. And I thought the main focus behind the X-games was to feature alternative sports?
