Just started Skiboarding this year, after 18 years of skiing behind me. Been about 5 times so far this year. I was borrowing a friends pair or soloman snowblades at first but when I decided I was done with skiing, I ordered a pair of Snowjam 90's. (BTW, so far so good, moguls are a little different and landing jumps is MUCH easier). I want to get into the park alittle bit more and was wondering about rails. Are there any good techniques for learning them (never grinded anything since my skatboarding days 15 yrs ago). I've heard that they're really hard on the boards. Is this true? Etc. I figured this could possible be the Rail "sticky" for the forum if we get a good thread going.
Thanks!
Kero

Well Kero....I am still not a master of the rail like some people in here but I have learned a couple of things by watching the videos and reading the threads and just going for it.
1. Speed is your friend never attempt a rail at slow speed
2. Don't look down at your feet look at the end of the rail
3. Keep your feet about shoulder width appart
4. Keep your weight more on your lead foot
5. and last but not least...you must commit fully don't go at it half assed.
Give it so time and some crashes for sure and you will get it. Try some boxes first to get used to sliding. Thats what I did anyway. Hope this helped a bit but i'm sure the masters in here are going to give you the BEST advice.
Good luck!!

Cool, thanks for the reply. On the boxes should I slide sideways or downhill to start? I see alot of snowboarders hitting them straight. What about rails ruining the skiboards? Any truth to this or can they handle it?

First i started with boxes head on, then when u get a little confidence then try popping the hips 90 degrees and slideing. this worked for me so good luck

I started off the same way just hitting the boxes head on now i can turn my boards to 90 degrees on to the boxes. It takes alot of practice an you have to commit once you get to that rail you just got to go for it. Dont be scared to let other riders watch you fall because then they know you are actually trying an your not just standing there to look good. Good Luck in you journey of Jibbing....Dont you just love that word

1. jump into it lean which ever way the rails going n do something first worry about consequences rail, i still havent fucked anything up yet except for my shoulder ona 180 of a jump that was too thin. other then that nothing that bad. o and nutting a few tall rails. oh well

Kero....I havent personally had any boards wrecked by rails or boxes yet but it has happened. You could catch your edge on part of a rail or a metal burr and pull your edge out. But I wouldnt worry about that too much. Just have fun and if it happens it happens. Kinda comes down to...do you want to progress and have more fun or worry about the overall condition of your boards.
