I'm quite interested in skiboarding for many reasons. Is skiboarding as fast as skiing? I would like to keep up or pass my friends who are skiing 160/170 skis. I will be the only one in my group with skiboards. I plan on getting the M7's. I will mostly be carving the groomers until confidence builds up.
Thanks
How good are they is the realy question. It's more how you ride than what you ride. But yeah you can keep up with most people, except hardcore racers.
i am the only skiboarder in the snowboarder group and its ok, i am not slower than they are! ..ride fast get cool!:)
I was riding today and just taking pretty big carving turns I was going faster than any of the skiers..
That probably stemmed from the fact that it was so icy I was really turning less than I would normally, but whatever.
The point is, skiboards aren't super slow, nothing that makes a huge difference.

Keeping up isn't a problem. I just hating waiting for my snowboarding buddys. It takes them all day to get "suited up" before they can even ride the mountain. I just get off the lift and go.

i can go faster than the snowboarders i go with backwards. but i think speed depends on riding style, i could tuck my knees to my chin and go in straight line and go real fast but i'd rather carve

Speed depends on how brave you are. If you point the skiboards down, and just gun it, you will be fast on just about anything 90 cm or above. The only hard parts are trying to slow down (which burns a lot of energy), trying to turn quickly to avoid obstacles, or fear catching up to you and slowing down for no reason.
If you are fast on skis you will be pretty fast on skiboards as well. I think 90% of it is the ability.

NO its more 50% ability and 50% how mu7ch you weagh cos the more LBS. you have on the snow the faster you go

And if your a ripper, you can fly! I raced my snowboarding buddy last season, and we are both fairly advanced riders, and i kicked his ass!!:p I was on 94cm Imperials, if you can ski fast then you can skiboard fast...simple as that. Length like someone said does play a part in speed, but also so does surface area, as in the width of the board that is touching the snow, hence why skiboards are faster than say kids skis or whatever...

I guess you can go too fast:

hahah....^ thats kinda funny. Up at Holiday Valley in NY where i do most of my skiboarding they hand out "orange tickets" they cut off your lift ticket and replace it with an orange one. This means you were "bad" sometime durring the day. Then if they catch you being "bad" again in that day, they take your lift ticket totaly and your made to sit in the lodge all day (which REALLY blows!) me and my friends ended up with several orange tickets last season, but never received a red one(thank god). They hand out these tickets for being in the woods hittin jumbs and "goin to fast" and thngs like that, but hey if thats just the chance you got to take to have a blast so be it!!! :p hahah

man, that sounds like a real uptight mountain.
my small local mountain that I used to ride at after school was like that.. took my pass away for like 2 days because I was grinding on a snowmaking pipe (they didnt even see that part) and was in the "woods" by the side of a trail. Uptight assholes, I tried to get away from the guy but he followed me down screaming.. Lol
More and more are becoming easy goin about their rules though.. like all the mountains designating tree skiing areas, and not really caring about who goes in there.
I've had 5 ski patrollers chase me once! Seriously frightening...they didn't catch me tho, I dont think they thought it was worth it. That was on skiboards so that settles the speed thing... also I was busting it thru trees.
The worst thing ive ever gotten for going fast was a guy i wasnt expecting to be a patrol guard stuck his ski pole out just as I was passing at face level and clotheslined me in the mouth... I was lucky i didnt break a tooth. I wiped out huge tho... that was bullshit. I cant believe they get away with that; If i wasnt in horrible pain i wouldve found out who he was and got him fired or sued. Another one did that to my friend (snowboarder) and he stole the guy's pole. It was fuckin hilarious, he still has the pole, its like a trophy.

Dumbest thing I've ever done on the mountain was when I was a skiier :(. Some ugly chick that was a snowboarder was harassing me and saying crap so I grabbed her board and threw it down the hill. It ended up going a ways down the hill and going over a miniature cliff. Well anyways, a ski patrol dude saw me do it and he cut my ticket. It was all worth it in the end tho cuz she had to have a guy go down there and get her board and took him bout an hour to get it haha.
