Plans are still up in the air for me. It will probably hinge on whether I get a research job this semester or not. If I do make it up, it will probably be only for the Backcountry day.

Hey all,

I saw that Northstar was on the Schedule and I wanted to let people know that Zumiez does a Transworld snow pack for 19.99 + 8 something tax and shipping totaling $28.00. In that pack you get a 2 for 1 Northstar ski pass. We used the Zumiez one last year for Heavenly, so I know they work. I already snatched one up. Here is the site:

http://www.zumiez.com/transworld-snow-northstar-bonus-pack.html

Just a deal to pass on.

Also there is a site with a free card, Descent Pass. That will give discounts when you buy their tickets ahead of time online. I'ts free so no loss. It does as well as the Snow Bomb card without paying for it. Here is that site:
http://www.descentpass.com/region/sierras/ca

If I find more or better ones I'll pass them on.

Thanks Can .. that is a great deal .. especially with the rack rate Northstar tickets at 79 dollars a day!

PS , there will definetly be resort dates on the scheduled backcountry dates . Valmorel and Wendell will be hosting the resort days on Thursday and Saturday if I am not there . Thursday will be Kirkwood and Saturday will be Sierra at Tahoe . I am listing Valmorel as an official Shredfest guide as he is now a certified Tahoe Homie making his 2nd trip across the pond and also having the only official custom Tahoe Shredfest 1 Spruce 120 in the world !!!!

We will arrive Sat. the 27th - midday. The wife is only staying for the 28th, 1st, and 2nd.

I have to drive her to the Reno airport on Wednesday the 3rd then drive back to south tahoe, so I will unfortunately have to miss that day of riding.

I am staying for the south tahoe days and will be there all the way through the 6th ... driving back home sunday the 7th.

I am up for either backcountry trips or resorts at south tahoe. Whether I do that advanced backcountry day will likely depend on how much my powder riding progresses between now and then and how weak my legs are by that Thursday. However, I'd also hate for JJUE to not have any takers on his offer to guide the backcountry trips.

Tight trees, super steep is outside of my comfort zone right now - but that would not keep me from going. If JJUE thinks I can make it down without killing myself, I'm in. I also have no problem hiking up and then doing the walk of shame and hiking back down if it ends up being too hairy for me.

Anyway: From my camp, 2 of us for the first three north tahoe days, no riding Wednesday, just 1 (me) for the three south tahoe days.

Guys/Gals,

My friend Neal is hosting a fund raiser in Truckee for Ataxia the first night we'll be up there. For $20 you can eat and drink all you want. It will be 2 doors down from where we'll be staying. You can drop in and out of his place and ours, eat and drink. I plan to do that. His nephew Kile has this Lou Gerig's type disease which will eventually take his life. There will be raffles for your donations and silent auctions for lots of other items. Email me with your personal email if you are interested in attending and making a donation. I will forward the E invite so you can respond and learn more about this disease.

I also wanted to let everyone know that right now in sacramento and through the end of the season Shell Gas is giving a free buy 1 get 1 for a purchase of 10 gallons of gas. so fill up in sacto and save on the mountain. I have a few already. They are good for MT shasta only on tue and thurs. Sierra at tahoe Sunday thru Friday and Northstar Sunday thru Friday. These could save everyone tons!

Also, I am wondering how this all works? Is everyone staying together at a certain hotel every night? Can we just show up to the mountain on the days we want to go? Im interested in being a part of this but am not sure if I can afford it. Deff not the whole week. Maybe just Sun and Mon. is that cool?

Come out whichever days you can. Just confirm the location by viewing this thread in case there is a last minute change. We usually meet up at the main lift ticket booth before the lifts open. But if you are running late, just ask the lifties where all the skiboarders went. :D

As for hotels/condos, everyone is on their own based on their individual preferences in the North Lake Tahoe area between Truckee, Tahoe City, and Carnelian Bay.

Hey , Skafreak .. hope you can make it ... by the way ... my last trip thread is actually a preview of Waterhouse peak in south lake tahoe ... . the peak scheduled for Saturday March 6th if conditions are good .. The shot of our tracks in the trees is the more moderate descent we made on our 2nd run .. the first route we did is steeper ... everything through big trees ....
usually has a skin track broken and is usually a mixed use skins /snowshoe track but no one boot packs it and you need either skins /touring binding or snowshoes to do the climb.. I have Sherpa with Fritschi binding and climbing skins to loan you or snowshoes if you want to carry your own Sherpa with Spruce bindings on your pack ...

http://www.skiboardsonline.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=9389

ps anyone else interested in the advanced Saturday backcountry trip who is not really sure of their backcountry riding skills , should probably sign up for the more moderate Thursday backcountry trip .. so I can see how your backcountry riding skills are like before going on the Saturday trip .. the problem with the Saturday trip , is we go right to the top and the terrain is steep and treed and you are committed to the full 1700 vertical of it once reaching the top , the Thursday trip will have a variety of short pitches to test your backcountry snow riding skills ... it is very different snow then at ski resorts... even off piste at ski resorts and can be challenging .. Anyone is welcome on Thursday as it will be a low key fun trip even if you are just interested in getting out on some snowshoes and hiking about ...

No cost ! well , maybe you can buy me a drink if you have a good time .. if you don';t have a good time , just don't tell anyone :)!

, snowboarder is fine , glad to have you guys along .. you need snowshoes that will work with your boots , ( some snowshoes don't work well with ski boots ) .. a backpack that you can attach your skiboards or snowboard , ... collapsible ski poles are highly recommended and very useful but not completely necessary . , you carry water and a lunch . , that 's it !

Hey jack,
I really wanna try the back country trip. As you said its really steep in areas and not similar to off piste at the resorts. I haven't used snow shoes before but i do have collapsible poles and a shovel and pack. I consider myself a expert skiboarder and can do any terrain at sierra. Also i cant make thursday due to school and so sat is the only other day.

What do you think i should do? Do you think im ready for the sat trip and dont really need the intermediate trip.

Thanks

Glad to have you along ..!
snowshoes are easy to get used to ... I do have two loaner pairs of snowshoes for Saturday for those who need it .. for saturday everyone needs to carry shovels , and wear an avy beacon , i have one loaner pair , otherwise we will need to look into rentals .

The Ktp is a superb board for backcountry , just put the binding back into the rear inserts and it acts like a wide bodied 110 in backcountry snow ...
here is trip report with me on KTP's and snowshoes which is a great combo ... this is one of the areas I am thinking about for Thursday , really a beautiful area with a variety of shorter slopes of varying steepness

I wouldn't want to borrow any equipment, but fyi outside chance I might be able to make it thurs - sat (sat contingent on if I did okay on thursday).

Depends on my work and if I get my backcountry setup together. Alas Mr Singer can not modify Sherpas 130s with Fritschi bindings until April, if then. That's my preferred setup so I'm mulling over what to use in the meantime.

I have 22" MSR Lightning shoes, but I think in deeper pow I will sink (I weigh 155).

As far as boots I grabbed some used Raichle (now known as Deeluxe I think) snowboarding hard boots with adjustable lean I'm hoping might work for both Skiboard AT and in my snowshoes. If they don't I'll have to find another AT boot that does.

so I'd say consider me a probably not, but you never know :)

Destin , unfortunately those hardboot snowboard boots will NOT work in Fritschi AT bindings , but , will work in non release skiboard bindings. If you have regular downhill ski boots , those will work in Fritschi AT bindings. You are welcome to borrow my Sherpa with Fritschi AT bindings /skins for Thursday if you have downhill ski boots.. I have a medium Fritschi binding on it which will accept up to Mondo size 29.5 boot . On Saturday I might loan that AT fritschi to Skafreak if he comes , but you are welcome to borrow any of my other boards .. I also have a Fritschi mounted Spruce 120 with skins .. .. hope you can make it !
your snowshoes should work , if we have enough folks breaking trail ahead of you ..

Carolyn & I are doing a little on-the-fly trip planning tonight. Can you refresh us re: what town y'all are staying in for the first part of the week? It sounds like Jack, Wendell, Robert, Dave et al are staying in Truckee?

We're searching travel package deals and found one that includes a ski in-out room at Squaw...I imagine that wouldn't be too bad a drive to get to Alpine Meadows and Northstar from there?

Bill,

We are staying at Carnelian Rentals (www.carnelianwoods.com) when in North Lake Tahoe.

I beleive Chad and Robert (and their wives) are also in the same condo facility, just a few doors down from us.

BTW: Maria and I stayed at Squaw last year and enjoyed the accommodations and convenience until 5:00 am in the mornings when the groomers came by our window.

Bill,

It worked well for us last year since we ended up riding at Squaw for two days in a row and did not travel to any other resorts from there. It is always nice to just walk in and not have to drive. Access by highway was fine, much friendlier highway than to Kirkwood last year for Shredfest.

The condo was spacious and well appointed at the Squaw Lodge. Only complaint was that we were next to the runs so it was noisy when groomers were working.

The village had a number of restaraunts, but we seemed to always end up at the blue coyote if I recall the name of it correctly.

which property are you looking at at squaw , i have stayed at most of them ..

Hi Jack, thanks.

It's called "The Resort at Squaw Creek". It looks nice from the pictures.

Hi Jack, thanks.

It's called "The Resort at Squaw Creek". It looks nice from the pictures.

Bill , that place is a 4 star nice hotel and is away from the main hubbub of the village . they built a connecting lift to get from there over to the main part of the resort the runs that are going down into that hotel are nice blue groomed slopes .. this year there is plenty of snow right down to that hotel which is not true in some years. it has a very nice restaurant , the rooms and service very nice , definitely ski in and ski out .. at night they have shuttle that takes you over to the main restaurants and stuff of the village .. nice pool , hot tubs, sauna .. ,groomed cross country trails right out from the place as well ,
often very pricey .. but sometimes has good deals , and if you can get a good price .. i would recommend it highly!, you will not hear the grooming machines like over at the Squaw valley lodge where Slow stayed.. i really liked it when i stayed there a few years back ..

Bill

Done deal!...we just finished booking flights, lodging, etc. Our flight arrives in Reno around noon on Saturday, staying at "The Resort at Squaw Creek", riding with y'all Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, then home on Wednesday. It'll be a hoot!

Thanks for the detailed info on the resort, Jack. We were looking at pictures, it seemed nice but you never really know.

Grooming machines are obnoxious keeping you up at night, but I have to say one of my favorite ways to wake up in the morning is to the sound of avy control bombs.

The Thursday backcountry trip is filling up , here is the roster I have so far and equipment plans . I will be emailing all you folks separately by private email to confirm plans . Anyone else planning on attending please let me know asap ,so we can complete equipment planning . I think I know what skiboards you guys are on and am trying to match your skiboards for our backcountry trip with proper equipment .

XXXander and snowboard friend ...
Xxxander if you want I have a KTP to lend you that you can use with your own skiboard binding and a snowshoe to lend .. do you have a pack that can carry your skiboard /snowshoe and ski poles ?
Snowboard friend .. I have approach skiboards fitted with skins and a snowboard binding that I can loan him . same question .. does he have a pack that can carry his snowboard and ski poles?

Fighting for Air ... I have a snowshoe I can loan you .. I assume you have your Condors that you will carry .. and I also assume you have a pack to carry the Condors and collapsible poles ?

IlliterateABC , please confirm when you can that you can come on Thursday .. if you come . I will loan you a Fritschi mounted Spruce 120 with skins , , this can be used with any skiboot as long as your ski boot is not too big ( what is your Mondo ski boot size ) ? Same question do you have a pack that can carry a Spruce 120 and do you have ski poles ?

ps the best kind of ski poles are collapsible ski poles that you can reduce in size and put on your pack , . if you do not have them , i may be able to supply some to some folks but do not have enough for everyone ... also if you do not have packs . i have some extra packs but again , not enough for everyone ..
let me know !

ps you guys can just email me back directly at jack.jue@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu

As for Saturday .. Skafreak when you find out for sure if you can come or not let me know and I will begin final planning for Saturday .

If you think you'll be short, I'd be happy to ship you my pole/scabbard combo for loan at shredfest, these could be returned anytime.

Hey All,

I just found Alpine Meadows lift tickets for 47% off. The only catches are that they are only good on 2/28, the day we are planning to go there, and that they must be purchased ahead of time.

I may order tonight. Jack you would know best. Is this a place that closes much due to weather. I just finished reading Wall of White today, so I am a bit jaded right now.

sounds like a good deal ,
i hear wall of white was a good book about the alpine meadows avalanche in the 1980's
no ,never closes , unless we get another once in a century avalanche condition like that one ;)! folks were worried about our week long storm , this year .. but we just got nice snow and continue to get regular doses of new snow .. best conditions in years.. was just at alpine meadows yesterday and the conditions were stellar, best in years... it is a great mountain with a lot of varied terrain , yet small enough to be manageable and for folks to ride together , we should have a great time ..

Hi xxxander ... yes , your buddy can borrow my KTP . depending on what he wants to do , he can use snowshoes or touring binding .. don't worry about renting poles ... i have both of you covered with collapsible poles to borrow ..

ps . so far i have definite confirmation from fighting for air ,
xxxander and buddy for thursday .. i have heard from a couple of others who are maybes .. please let me know asap
also let me know if you will be in south lake tahoe the night before or are coming up from Sacto or Bay area for a day trip so I can explain logistics ... severe bad weather , avalanche hazard etc will cancel the trip and we will go to sierra at tahoe instead . the thursday trip will be echo lakes ( see recent trip report I posted ) , also change in resort schedule to accomodate backcountry change in venue ... Thursday will be Sierra at tahoe and Saturday will be Kirkwood.

For those attending the meet and greet on Saturday February 27th Wendell and I will have a number of Northstar/Sierra two for one coupons to hand out to lucky Shredfesters first come first serve . You buy one lift ticket at the resort and the coupon allows you to get a second ticket for free.

Change in schedule for the South Lake Tahoe resort days ... This will allow folks coming for the backcountry to bail easily to the resorts to join resort folks should the weather be bad ...

Thursday will be Sierra at Tahoe instead of Kirkwood.

Saturday will be Kirkwood instead of Sierra at tahoe .

Jack,

Any long term weather forecasts available for North Lake Tahoe? Any winter storms predicted for the next two weeks?

Hi Slow .. it is nortoriously difficult to predict beyond about two weeks .. but it looks like we will have extended fair weather for the next two weeks before the storm doors "might" open again as we arrive for Shredfest ... we will just have to see .. here is the "Dweeb " extended report
By the way snow coverage is most excellent already at this time at all resorts in Tahoe and even if there are no storms the next two weeks we will be in great shape snow wise for Shredfest with maybe some powder days again when we get there.

MOTHER NATURE TO TAKE A BREAK OVER THE FAR WEST AS FULL LATITUDE UPPER RIDGING DEVELOPS BY WEEKS END.....THE STORM TRACK HEADS NORTH NOW.....HIGH TEMPS MOVING INTO THE LOW 50S BY MID WEEK, NEXT WEEK....

THE FAR WEST WILL BE UNDER INCREASING HEIGHTS THE NEXT 7 DAYS AND SO THE STORM TRACK WILL BE HEADED BACK INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THE NEXT SHORT WAVE WILL CLIP MONO COUNTY FRIDAY, WITH CLOUDS, BREEZY CONDITIONS IN TOWN, AND GUSTS TO 60MPH OVER THE CREST. NO PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

"HIGHS THIS WEEKEND WILL BE IN THE 40S AND LOWS IN THE 20'S IN TOWN. IT WILL BE A FAIR WEATHER HOLIDAY WEEKEND"

WARM SANTANA'S TO BRING TOASTY WEATHER TO COASTAL SECTIONS OF SOUTHERN CA AND OFF- SHORE FLOW TO SOUTH CENTRAL CA WILL PUSH HIGHS INTO THE 80S BY MIDWEEK.

LONGER RANGE:

A LOT OF THE MAJOR INDEXES ARE POINTING TOWARD AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF FAIR WEATHER, WITH THE RETURN OF TEMPERATURE INVERSIONS NEXT WEEK AND WARMER THEN NORMAL TEMPS. THERE WILL DEFINITELY BE A FEELING OF SPRING IN THE AIR! EXPECT DRY WEATHER NOW.... FOR AT LEAST A WEEK!

THE NAO IS NEGATIVE
THE PNA IS POSITIVE

THE WHEELER-HEADON PHASE SPACE IS INDICATING A PHASE SPACE 8-1. THIS IS USUALLY AN INDICATION THAT AAM IS DECREASING AND THAT MOTHER NATURE WILL LIFT HER FOOT OFF THE GAS FOR A WHILE AND ALLOW HEIGHTS TO RISE OVER THE FAR WEST. AT THE SAME TIME, MAJOR LONG WAVE TROFING RETURNS TO THE CENTRAL PACIFIC AND COLD WEATHER WILL DUMP INTO THE NATIONS MID SECTIONS REINFORCING THE WESTERN RIDGE.

IT IS DIFFICULT TO SAY HOW LONG THIS WILL LAST....IT MAY BE THAT NO MAJOR STORMS ARE IN OUR PICTURE UNTIL THE LAST WEEK OF FEBRUARY......

DR HOWARD AND THE DWEEBS...................:-)

Hi Slow .. it is 800 am in the morning .. Here are some general details of each days events .
We will have some very special guests for Alpine Meadows on Sunday , Northstar on Monday , and Squaw Valley on Tuesday
So if you can make it on those days , please do .. on Northstar Monday you may be able to see some pretty spectacular
park riding by skiboarders!

Meet *and Greet * is *Saturday * * February 27th will be at *500pm *at our Truckee rental house.
Our rental house is located in Truckee and is *off Brockway road ,
If you *can bring *some snacks to share and drinks *..
email me if you need the address
jack.jue@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu

On Sunday we will all meet at 900am in front of the main ticket booth at Alpine Meadows. We will all take one run together on Roundhouse Chair an intermediate easy blue run . We will then split into two groups . The high energy group will take off with our special guests and explore the mountain on their own . I will ride with the relaxed crew for the morning , basically giving a tour of the nice blue runs all over the mountain , so everyone can see the entire resort and understand where the relaxed runs are and the more advanced runs . This will be a relaxed morning and we will gear the riding to our least experienced riders and take our time . We will meet up at 1200 noon at the main lodge cafeteria for lunch with the high energy folks ( outside if the weather is nice , inside if not ) . In the afternoon , for those interested I will lead an exploration of the steeps and offpiste runs . Other folks can join up with folks at their own level and ride whatever runs they want .

On Monday we wil meet at 900am in front of the main ticket booth at Northstar which is located in the Village next to the ice skating rink . Northstar requires you to park remotely and take a shuttle to the main village, then you have to walk through the village to the ticket booth .. This all takes a bit of time .so give yourself enough time in the morning to make it to the ticket booth in time to meet everyone . we will all go up to mid mountain via Gondola or access chair and go to the main large park to watch a park demo .. or to do the park yourself for this who want . This is the nicest park in Tahoe with huge features etc .. .. Then like at Alpine I will lead a morning tour of the blue runs and those interested in going for the extreme stuff can hook up with the high energy crew .. Lunch will be a 1230 at the main midmountain lodge . In the afternoon I will lead a steep and off piste tour ..

On Tuesday we will meet at 900am at Squaw Valley in front of the main ticket booth in the village . Bill ( you and carolyn will probably want to take the complimentary shuttle rather than ski from your hotel to meet us there at 900am )
we will split into two groups again , high energy folks can go right for the goods at the bottom K2 . olympic lady etc . I will take the more relaxed folks up the Funitel to Gold coast and we will explore the nice blue runs at the top of the mountain .. we will meet back at the main village at the Blue Coyote Sports Grill for lunch . Hopefully will be up there for Monday at Northstar. I also should be up next Saturday at Sierra, which in the original post seemed like a shredfest spot, but from jack's most recent post it looks like that's been swapped with Kirkwood. Which is it?

Any chance any of you guys will large quivers will have some boards to lend or rent out? A friend from my hockey team might come with me on Monday. He normally snowboards but he's been interested in trying out skiboards at some point since he saw me on them. I feel like he'll pick it up quickly and have a lot of fun since he plays hockey, but I'm reluctant to put him on the snowblades that most rental shops give you when you ask for skiboards.

OK ... quick update. I'm taking today off since we finished up part one of the week yesterday. It has been truly epic. Wish you were here Pinkkid. It has been fantastic.

Weather was beautiful for days 1 and 2 at Alpine Meadows and Northstar. Got some great footage but unfortunately cannot post up right now.

Yesterday at Squaw we were getting dumped on with lots of fresh snow. Up top it was like riding on fluffy clouds all day - beautiful fresh pow all over.

If I can post up some video links later, I will. Will also see about getting some of the photos up on photobucket for you all to check out.

Back at it tomorrow in South Tahoe.

For those of you that couldn't make it, we hope to see you next year. It is an incredible event with lots of great people.

Take care.

We made it home last night from the first three days of riding. It was a hoot. I don’t even know where to start.

The only problem was lack of hours in the day and the minor detail of limited human endurance, although that’s kind of like complaining that your giant safe isn’t big enough to hold all of your gold and treasure.

Everyone should experience, at least once, following Jack “No Mercy” Jue on a Death March to ride down iceberg-sized moguls in Torture Canyon.

The R8 crew happen to be more than just unbelievably talented riders. Those guys are genuinely likeable, pleasant and engaging young men. We couldn’t ask for better ambassadors.

I wish I was a kid again and my name was Dave Lynam.

The ladies have been conspiring. I fear they are conspiring against us.

Jack, Dave, Wendell and Craig have the patience of Job.

The whole trip was worth it just to meet and get to know Jeff Singer.

Here’s Bill Murray along with Greco and a couple of friends partying on a Red Army tank:

Slow: hope the rest of your vacation went well and that you all enjoyed your time in San Fran.

The rest of the vacation went very well. Jam packed as tourists, and the weather cooperated. San Francisco 49 mile drive, Fisherman's Warf, Alcatraz, Monterey and the Aquarium, Exploratorium, and all the standard tourist traps. Feedback from the family was that it was one of our best family vacations ever, because of Shredfest and those that participated. Now my kids understand why Maria and I go to Shredfest, it is more than skiboarding, it is a community gathering of like minded people. They are already working on me to fund the trip next year.

BTW: You left the condo in Carnelian Bay just in time. Late Wednesday afternoon the road up the hill was glare ice. Almost slid all the way down, and had a hell of an adventure getting back up that evening after supper. Was fine by Thursday morning when we had to leave.

I hope your drive home was uneventful.

Shelley,

Thanks for sharing those pictures! I miss Heavenly SO MUCH! I feel like such a kid seeing pics of places I've been so I can say "Hey, I know where that is, I've been there!" They gave that place an appropriate name, because it truly is Heavenly.

What I wouldn't give to live just a wee bit closer. I'm still dreaming for a winning lotto ticket so I can have a winter vacation home there. Maybe one day...

Double whammy is perfect for those who live in the area or who are gonna be in the area for a month or so to just ride!

hahaha, yes the line can be horrid at Sierra at Tahoe... lots of teenagers ride there.
