If you're looking for something basic Windows Movie Maker or iMovie depending on your OS will work. I'd recommend saving very frequently though.

Most other video editing software is going to be an investment. Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut are great but will cost you.

Pinnacle is great. Very easy to use yet still has all the tools you need and if you look for an older version, you'll save big $$$. I got my copy for $20. Roxio is good too and is fairly inexpensive.

If you are going to do large projects, you'll spend more money on hardware though. You'll need as much ram as you can get, a video card if you don't already have one, and nice fast machine. Without these components and dealing with large file sizes, expect your project to freeze and the program to shut down frequently.

Like Courtney said earlier, Adobe Premiere pro is very good. If you want to go even more fancy, and add some crazy effects go with Adobe After Effects.

You can download demo software of both of these at www.adobe.com

Premiere pro will cost you $800US and is not exactly user friendly if you don't know what you are doing.

Premier Elements 8 is friendlier and is $80US or you can buy Premeir Elements 8 and Photoshop Elements 8 as a package for $120US which is very user friendly!

I second Pinnacle Studio. I am behind a few revisions but find it very easy to use.
