This years HGTV Dream Home Giveaway is in the Lake Tahoe, Truckee Ca area. It would be awesome if one of our online family members here won it. Oh the get togethers we could have there.

The rumor I have heard on the HGTV houses is that in all the years they have been doing it no winner has ever kept the home. They all get sold mainly to cover the tax burden created by the winnings. Not sure if it's true but interesting none the less.

Taxes were the third thought for me (I have a good tax guy ).

First thought is just how big of a party I could throw at the place before I sold or rented it out.

Second thought was the fact that it does not seem to have a hot tub. The apres skiboarding soak is critical for me when riding multiple consecutive days. You would think a Tahoe place would have hot tub on the patio, no?

The people who won those houses had it all wrong if they sold them to pay the taxes. I would sell all of my other stuff and go live in the dream house in Napa, Stowe, Tahoe, etc. No hesitation.

This assumes you have enough assets to liquidate to offset the tax burden of several million dollars worth of winnings. This is why HGTV starting adding a cash prize to the package but I doubt a $250,000 cash prize is enough to offset the value of a multimillion dollar home that the IRS will treat as part of your income for the current tax year.

I actually think they (the IRS) require you pay or have arrangements made to pay the taxes prior to claiming the prize. I had a friend who won big on a gameshow and was not able to take delivery of any of the prizes until she resolved the tax liability.

In my world a sauna must accompany a hot tub. They go together like peanut butter & jelly.

Damn right! While we are at it throw in a kegerator and an endless supply of craft beer and this house is perfect.

The one a few years ago at Winter Park I think was essentially a ski in/out at Maryjane.

This years house really doesn't impress me much. It looks sort of small, cold and industrial. The view appears to be just sparsely planted pines in a meadow, no mountain or lake views and no garage to keep your big boy toys in.

Previous houses would of made great bed and breakfast inns. That would be hard to do with this house. Probably the best thing would be to sell this one for top dollar and buy an older home or maybe a condo with a view. Still you could rent it out to cover annual taxes.
