Update:
The first ever Midwest Meet will be held at Mount Bohemia, MI (in the Upper Peninsula).

Costs for riding / lodging can be found just below along with carpool information. There are plenty of people to carpool with. Don't be afraid to ask!

Bohemia's Website (http://www.mtbohemia.com/)

http://www.mtbohemia.com/Images/trail-map-sm.jpg

"Mount Bohemia has the longest runs with the highest vertical and deepest powder in the Midwest. Bohemia is all-natural, and has no problem without snow guns. The average snowfall in the Keweenaw is 273 inches. The lake effect snow is dry similar to western resorts and accumulates as powder which is untouched because we do not groom. Bohemia's two new sections; the Outer limits has 100+ acres of inbounds backcountry skiing with 17 new runs even longer and trickier than before."

Updated Feb 3rd:
Here's who we have so far for hitting Mount Bohemia March 6 & 7. (I'll update this as we get changes, please correct me if anything is wrong.)

Right now we have a group of 9 confirmed. We could squeeze into 2 cabins...probably, but I think we may have Matt yet, who I don't have counted, and neither do I count Gohammer and his friend in that 9, since he hasn't responded to me to confirm up yet. So at 9, with 3 cabins the cost is $75.57 including paypal fees.

I would like to start taking payment for these rooms so we can set the number of cabins we need and give one back if that's what happens. I'd really like to get all 4 full, because we'd have all 4 of them to ourselves then, but if we can't, I'll give one back at a $10 cancel fee.

I already have krupper, GOM's and Courtney's $25 from the season pass held for them, so they only need to pay me $50.57, that's why there are two options.

Please pay below.

Also if you'd rather just send it via paypal to my email you can do that too, altrealitygames@yahoo.com is my paypal email address.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Cost Breakdown:

Cabin/person/night based on 4 people per cabin: $27.50 so $55 for the weekend.

Pass per day of skiing $47/day. So if you are there one day its $47 or two days at $94.

For anyone interested they have a season pass sale for $99. If anyone wants to go up and hit a half day on Friday as well I could probably be convinced to drive up early am and get a day in for free on Friday.

T-Shirts (not confirmed yet) ~$10/each

Door prize tickets (not confirmed yet) No price yet as we aren't sure what/if we are going to do for this.

OK all, we are set with a confirmation for 4 cabins as of right now. They made sure to put them all in a row together for us, and it sounds like if we need more we can get them.

That takes us up to 16 people, 4 per cabin. I went a little high on the number I think, but I'd like to have us covered instead of scrambling for more later. Otherwise too it looks like there may be room on the floor to bunk out if we don't have enough room.

Also if we need to we can cancel the cabins up to 14 days in advance, with only getting charged a $10 service fee. We'll cross that bridge when/if we need to.

I am not asking for any money as of right now. I'd like to get everything figured out and solid numbers before we start rolling money together. I do have a paypal account where I'll be asking for the costs of lodging and shirts to be sent to, but like I said that'll wait until a later date.

The lady at Mt Bohemia said that there are no kitchens in the cabins, but there is one in the common building for our use, but we'd need to bring our own pots and pans along. So that's something to remember. I suspect we'll be gathering in that building more then the individual cabins.

Also if anyone plans to stay over on Monday night let me know and I'll talk to Bohemia about extending one cabin an extra night.

Rideshare Info:

Lets save the environment...or maybe just a few bucks on gas!

I'm going to list who is driving from where, and who will be in their cars so you guys can try to get as many in as few cars as possible so we all have more money for the slopes!

From the West:
Minneapolis
Courtney's Car I'd be available to pick people up at MSP. I could also take up to 3 more in my car as well. I'd probably leave sometime Friday to avoid driving early then riding on Saturday.

gohammer + 1 Has room for 3-5. May leave as early as Thursday night or early Friday am. And may stay through Monday for maximum board time.

From the South
Wisconsin
Andrews Car Room for 4 with gear. 1 spot held for my friend Nate. 1 spot open for sure. I am thinking of leaving early on Friday am and getting some runs in on Friday afternoon.

You may want to add Manitoba and Ontario to the logo.:D

Granite Peak was a lot of fun 2 seasons ago, but am looking for a reason to get out to Giants Ridge or another MN resort.

Ahh very true Slow. We want to invite anyone that wants to come join us, it isn't just restricted to the Midwest, it's just the location of the meet so everyone knows it's not Colorado or the east coast style, smaller hills and shorter runs but still lots of fun!

I am not overly a fan of Granite Peak myself, too much thrill for too short of a time. All their runs are 1/4 of the run is straight down then 3/4 almost flat as you float your way to the lift line. I don't know how easy it will be but a place like Lutsen was fantastic when I went a couple years ago. They have a run that's over a mile long, now most of you will laugh at that, but for the Midwest that is really long. The only problem with Lutsen is it's really far away for a lot of people in the states and we want to get something somewhat centralized, but we'll see what people want to do.

Like we said we are open for anything.

Giants Ridge and Lutsen are both fun. But, I'll always be a little bias towards Giants Ridge since it's my home resort.

Upper Michigan gets dumped on by the lake and there are lots of resorts pretty close to each other so that may be an option if people are willing to travel. There's not much else around the UP though as far as after riding activities.

Also, we may want to look at places that have night riding.

adeehr
05-19-2009, 12:58 PM
I'd love to do Mount Bohemia in the UP, but it's 90% backcountry and there is NOTHING else to do up there so without night skiing it may be really really boring.

Yeah that was pretty much the case when I went to Indian Head. There was no night skiing and once the hill was closed there was nothing to do at all. Night skiing would be nice so we could get more riding time in and not feel like we have to ride all day without breaks to get our moneys worth in lift tickets.

I don't know much about any of these places, but we should keep in mind amount of bars and such for drinking purposes at night. It still is vacation and doesn't all need to be about the hills. I'm sure any place it will be a good time.

Godofmedia

Don't know if you caught it on Facebook but I was looking at Whitecap, but really it kind of seems to fail in comparison to all of these other ones.

I would vote for Bomemia but like you guys said nothing to do after the resort closes. I am down for anywhere that I can do some tree skiing and some drops. I found at Jay that I may not be as good at off piste but I like it much more.

Looking at Ludson, they have some pretty cool runs there. But I don't feel the need to do 3/4 of a mile of moguls (again)...

Nothing against it Courtney but Giant's Ridge kind of looks pretty small, not in vertical drop but in terms of runs or even advanced runs for that matter.

Granite Peak seems to have potential considering it has 700 vertical feet and a shit ton of runs (no pun intended) lots of off piste, parks, and advanced runs...

Honestly Bighorn looks kind of weak all around.

Indian Head is about the same as Granite Peak in terms of off piste stuff but longer runs of less runs. I think I could go for that.

Marquette again like Big Horn just looks kind of weak. At least it does for somebody who would be traveling close to 7 hours to get there.

So to make my top 3 in order clear here they are:

1.) Granite Peak
2.) Bohemia
3.) Ludson

I would also like to suggest that we try and do this over winter/chrismas break to get as many people as humanly possible. My parents already aren't too happy that I am going to have to miss classes next February for the next Jay Jam but I can live with it. We may even want to find a 3 day weekend to do this on if we aren't going to do this durning a break. Also with the break timeframe I think that we could really spread the word hard to our fellow snow sliders to get on some skiboards and spread the joy that is the ride.

I told him to buy a new GPS on the way back...so...well we can always use my laptop, and just set up a map and go.

Solution number 2: get a passport...then he doesn't have to worry about it. (I plan on doing this before the season even starts)

I've added Whitecap to the list, but from what I've been told by one of my skiing buddies is that it's seriously lacking for nice snow. They got the owner to buy them a day pass at Indianhead because they hated it so much, wow sucks for that owner!

Lets keep hearing those suggestions.

Giants Ridge is a favorite of mine, but I've had more fun at Spirit Mountain (Duluth, MN) than any other place in the Midwest, maybe even more fun than any place out West here. They have a great terrain park and a high-speed quad that services a mile-long run. Not many places that I know of in the Midwest even have a mile-long run. They have night skiing which is usually brutally cold, but still a blast nonetheless. :)

Welch Village close to the Twin Cities can be really fun also and would be easier to get to by flying into MPL/STP International Airport. MPL/STP would probably be much cheaper to fly into than most airports in the Midwest.

Everytime I've been to Spirit it's been terrible. The riders have been rude and you constantly see people getting cut off in the park. The park set up was way too crowded and just strange. You pretty much had to drop down onto the rails from the awkwardly high "ride on" jumps. The high speed quad is nice but it seems like they don't groom their snow nearly enough. It's always been either super choppy or pure ice when I've gone. In the midwest you can't really expect very long runs so most of the hills around are just that - hills. Remember, can't compare this stuff to real "mountains" guys :)

I just had a blast dropping in and out of the big half pipe they had back then. Maybe they don't even have it anymore. Plus, I always went on weekdays when the crowds weren't around. That always makes a huge difference. I agree that Spirit was never as nicely groomed as Giants Ridge.

I guess I can't really give an accurate opinion since I've been out of Minnesota for a few years now. Unfortunately nothing stays the same in life and typically changes for the worse.

Ah yes riding during the week is definitely different. Everytime I went it was very busy.

I think if we go someplace over Christmas break everyplace is going to be crazy busy. I know at Giants Ridge Christmas break gets so busy a lot of the locals don't even like riding until the tourists clear out.

The weekend that I went it ended up being -30 for most of the weekend. Needless to say we went the first day...part of the second day and skipped the third. Then again the guy I went with got sick after the second day and ended up puking all the third day. That helped make my decision not to spend it out in the cold.

That would be awesome!

As for Lutsen's weather.. Yes it can be very very cold and windy. I've also been there a few times when the weather was amazing. March usually isn't too bad up there. We'll have to see what this winter brings us. Lutsen has a lot of variety. Park isn't their strong point but it is possible to find some powder and do a little tree riding - nothing like Jay but some. There's no night skiing and there's nothing else to do up there but there is a lot of on mountain lodging that looks pretty sick. I know there's at least one pool as well.

So far I'm most interested in Mount Bohemia or Lutsen. The riding would probably be most fun at these locations.

Mount Bohemia is an 8 hour drive from Minneapolis.
Lutsen is a 5 hour drive from Minneapolis.

It seems like most of the other suggested hills are pretty similar. I know Indian Head wasn't too much different than Giants Ridge and Spirit Mountain.

When you say there isn't anything to do you aren't kidding. We drove about a half an hour to go for dinner at a bar/burger joint one night. We spent the entire ride back looking for a bar....there is no such thing as a bar up there. They are all food joints too. The closest thing we could find was the American Legion hall in one of those small towns. We each had 2 Miller Lites, played a game of pool and moved on. I think we drank in 5 or 6 different places that night. One we even saw a local fall off his stool after having too many adult beverages... good times.

I'm interested in going to Bohemia for sure. I was hoping to go out this last winter with a buddy who skies, but that never happened. On the other hand, there's not much opportunity for me to go because of basketball all winter. Hopefully I'll be able to go out west for christmas again so I wouldn't be around for Christmas break. Anyways, I'll be watching to see if it ends up falling some time when I could go.

Edit: also, just saw shaggy's post about Searchmont, and I'd definitely be up for that, it's less than an hour from my house. It's a nice resort, more focused on all-mountain riding than park, but it does have a couple rails and some jumps. Also, it has a woodsy section that is a lot of fun to explore when there's been fresh snow.

indeed, starting this summer you'll need

U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport to enter or re-enter the United States when traveling via air, land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region, and Bermuda.

The U.S. Passport Card: The passport card is only valid for re-entry into the United States at land border crossings and sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region, and Bermuda.

WHTI-Compliant Travel Documents for U.S. citizen travel via land or sea, as of January 31, 2008:

Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)
State Issued Enhanced Driver's License (when available)
Enhanced Tribal Cards (when available)
U.S. Military Identification with Military Travel Orders
U.S. Merchant Mariner Document when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business
Native American Tribal Photo Identification Card
Form I-872 American Indian Card

i have a passport so it's pretty easy for me, but I hear the NEXUS card is a good alternative.

Well, I just saw this and I figured I would put in my two cents. I live by the twin cities, and I know my home mountain is Afton Alps. Im pretty sure you guys wouldn't dig it though, its small and you spend as much time on the lifts as on the hills, but I enjoy it because of the two large slopestyle runs they have, with lots of big air and boxes and stuff, and its an okay drive for me and my friends. We will have season passes their, so I would be up for that. Otherwise, I know you guys mentioned Welch Village and then the crowds, but when I went to Welch Village over last christmas break, there was hardly anyone there. However, it was VERY cold.

Other than those two, I havent been anywhere else in the midwest besides Buck Hill and Hyland, both of which I would strongly reccomend against going to. But I would be open to make a drive to anywhere within 10-15 hours of the Twin Cities, but if it was more than 5ish hours I would need to car pool, and if it was outside the US, I think I would need to be with someone who is 18 in order to cross the border, since I'm not 18 yet.... But I'm not sure if you need to be with an adult or not to cross the border. But other than that I'm up for anything, I just want to finally board with some other skiboarders instead of my snowboarder friends.

The US State Department made it official today. Passports will be needed to get back into the US if you leave:

Effective June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens returning home from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda, by land or sea, will be required to present one of the travel documents listed below.

U.S. Passport – This is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies a person’s identity and nationality. It is accepted for travel by air, land and sea.

U.S. Passport Card – This is a new, limited-use travel document that fits in your wallet and costs less than a U.S. Passport. It is only valid for travel by land and sea.

Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) – Several states and Canadian provinces are issuing this driver’s license or identification document that denotes identity and citizenship. It is specifically designed for cross-border travel into the U.S. by land or sea.

Trusted Traveler Program Cards – NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST enrollment cards can speed your entry into the U.S. and are issued only to pre-approved, low-risk travelers. The cards are valid for use at land or sea; the NEXUS card can be used in airports with a NEXUS kiosk.

Special Groups – Information for Children, Groups of Children, Native Americans, "Closed Loop" Cruises, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents, U.S. Military, Merchant Mariners, Ferries and Small Boats, and Boaters.

For more information, visit the US Department of State's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative website at http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/lang_eng/index.html.

This may hamper the thought of going to Searchmont, I still am up for it if that's where people want to go and have passports because I need to get one anyway.

Lets do a show of hands of whoever is around. This way we can either keep Searchmont in the conversation or rule it out early so we have a better idea of the area we ware working with.

Are you ok with going to Canada for the Midwest Meet knowing you NEED a passport?

adeehr

Yea I don't think they offer as much elevation as either of those two, but it is a more centrally located mountain to some on this board. It is just there as an option, by no means do we need to go there. I'd be ecstatic with Lutsen or Bohemia, I'd just like to see us get as many as we riders as we can!

My vote is for the biggest mountain with the longest runs. I haven't really had a chance to look online at all the options suggested yet but will when I get a chance. I've been to Lutsen once about 10 years ago and it wasn't bad from what I remember so I'd be up for that but my vote is still up in the air I guess. I do have a passport so Canada would be ok with me too.

I would have to pass on the meet if at Searchmont (or any other eastern Canadian resort) due to travel time being 17+ hours by vehicle or if not relatively close to a major airport to make it a direct flight.

Lutsen and then Bohemia would be my first two picks. But I believe the location should be the one that attracts the most participants.

Just an update - My situation has changed a little bit!
I am up for going wherever, whenever. I just want to get toghether with you guys for some boarding time. I have one friend whos interested in coming (He's starting skiboarding this winter.) I will also drive any distance, and I will drive myself and as the situation is now, I can legally drive 3 people with my truck, 4 or 5 if your comfortable with squeezing in and driving illegally. I would also be happy to haul luggage or whatever in the back of my truck if you want to set up some sort of a caravan for people who want to fly into MSP and then carpool from there, we could have 1 or 2 cars carrying mostly people and i could haul luggage in my truck.

If that was too much, just read: I'm down for whatever whenever and driving up to 2-3 people from MSP

I have 2 but haven't used them in a while. I'll round them up at some point and put them someplace I won't forget about them. They're kinda old but they should still work as long as we can all pick up the same channel.

I think it'll be a little easier to keep our group together since we won't have about 30 riders but they're always a good idea.

Hey everyone, as we look forward to this upcoming season I want to start to get prices together for all who are going to come to Bohemia on the first weekend in March with us for the MWM.

What do you all think about chipping in $10 extra and getting shirts?

Or how about chipping in some extra cash each and we'll buy 'door prizes' from G and have a drawing?

Thoughts?

All right all just an update on where we are.

I've contacted Bohemia and they have trailside cabins available. They each sleep 4 in bunks and are $110/night for the cabin. So that would come to $27.50/person/night/. So a total of $55 for 2 nights lodging, trailside. I think this is a great deal for all of us.

Skiing is $47/day at Bohemia. They do a rather unique thing. They offer season passes for $99. I know many of you wouldn't get a chance to go there again, so that really doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I am wondering if anyone wants to meet up for part of the day on Friday already and do some boarding Friday and also Saturday and Sunday. If we bought the season passes Friday would be basically free since you'd already be paying $94 for just Saturday and Sunday. Something to think about.

We are going to hold off on making a decision on the shirts and door prize ideas as we have plenty of time for that. Lets just try to solidify numbers now that people have an idea of prices.

Thanks,
Andrew & Courtney

Those cabins look pretty nice. (compared to others i've been in)
From the picture, it appears that each building is split into 2 cabins.

Trailside Cabins

$110 per night!

Stay trailside at Mount Bohemia's ski in/ski out cabins and get fresh tracks out your door in the morning!
Sleeps four (bunk beds)
linens are included, towels are not
bathroom, shower, sink
heated

Let's do a yurt if we have 8-10 people
Trailside Yurts

$185 per night!
Stay in a Yurt right on the mountain! These new yurts are located at the bottom portion of claim jumper. Ski right out your front door in the morning.

sleeps ten (bunk beds and pull out couch)
bring your own linens or sleeping bags and towels
bathroom,shower, sink
electric heat

adeehr
08-24-2009, 08:19 PM
We've talked about the yurts, but I haven't seen any internal pictures, and from our experience last year at Jay we realize some may want to go to bed and others stay up. With a Yurt you can't do that.

I'm glad I thought to start checking the boards again since all these meets are popping up. $150 for a weekend of skiboarding sounds like a great deal to me, so add me to the "interested" list. I concur with the idea of fewer people in each sleeping area. I'm a night owl, but when skiboarding is involved, "early to bed, early to rise" is my preference.

Shaggy, I'll bring part of my collection along, including my EMP's. I'll suggest you also give the KTP's a try.

I'm thinking we need to find a way to get up on top of that yurt and do some drops off of it and I will be killing those cliffs, I've been waiting a couple seasons for riding like this, hell yeah I'm excited.

Just remember, if no one saw it and it's not on video - it didn't happen :)

i really want to go to this, only issue is it's a 17-hour drive for me, haha.

if i can find a couple friends to come with me...which shouldn't be an issue...then i'll likely be in. put me on the interested list for now.

PS...considering i've only boarded for two days so far, how hard is this mountain? i mean by March i should have more experience but who knows, it's still an 8-hour drive for me to get to any big resorts.

Mt Bohemia is an expert hill, or so it says on it's website, and about the drive, 17 hours is nothing compared to some of the people that are going...I'm going 15 hours and Brian, the guy picking me up, is driving an additional 8.5 to 9 hours beyond that.

I'll add you to the interested list. If you could make it to Minneapolis, MN I could take you (and probably 1 more) the rest of the way. gohammer is also in Minneapolis and has room for additional people and gear.

that sounds great, one of my friends is already down to go...he's a snowboarder, i hope that's no problem :D

so what is the total cost of this going to be? i don't imagine there will be any circumstance leading to me not being able to attend, but i want to cover all my bases before i commit.

We'll grill your friend up for dinner. :D

We have the cost breakdown posted in the first couple posts of the thread. We'll have something more detailed later on and Andrew will be taking payments for lodging closer to the date probably via paypal. Hope you can make it, it'll be a good time!

I've been reading review after review

It seems to be one of the most desired locations for hardcore skiers.

I also checked the weather for March, low 20's (*F) during the day, 10 below at night. (that's cold for us east-coasters)

Get some flannel lined jeans/pants for when you're not boarding, they are awesome.

I have flannel lined pants that I used for snowboard pants about 5 years ago now...still have them even though the lining is torn up, and they are still the most comfortable pants I own.

Talked to Bohemia today, we are set with the 4 cabins for now. They only do ticket discounts at 20 people, so we probably won't qualify for that, but there may be another way to get tickets a little cheaper. I just need to know who is in for both days?

If I had someone to split the 19hr drive with I'd consider it. Anyone from Montreal area (QC, ON, VT) in for this?
