Austria is undoubtedly one of the best places where one can spend a perfect ski vacation. Cheap but of high quality, Austria has the best ski holiday packages. There are lots of Austria ski resorts one can choose from, with their superb mountains and unharmed landscapes.

The snowfall has also been excellent in the past few years, and there are lots of visitors who can attest to that. Either you are a beginner or an experienced skier, you will find everything you want here. If you are a beginner, you are sure to find excellent skiing classes. The accomodations in Austrian ski resorts are simply priceless.

After getting together last season with many of the east coast riders, Courtney and I discussed having a Midwest Meet this season.

All things are shaping up well and it appears we will be hitting up Mt Bohemia at the beginning of March. We want as many riders there as we can so come one come all, you don't need to be from the Midwest to join us!

We are debating shirts this time around just like we did last year for Jay. We'll see what the list looks like and see if people want to pony up an extra $10 for a shirt. We may also do door prizes, but we'll see on that.

An Early Skiboard Grin

Since I have already started to receive feedback on the forum, I feel like it is only fair to begin posting a blog entry or two to get things going...

Since I have already started to receive feedback on the forum, I feel like it is only fair to begin posting a blog entry or two to get things going on my end. Here’s a little unpolished teaser. After I clean it up some and possibly add to it, I will send it out to whet the appetite of a few editors I know. It should give them a rough idea where I am going with my series this winter. And since, you are all helping, it should give you all an opportunity to see where I am going AND provide feedback. I want to represent your sport to the best of my ability, so let me know what you do and do not like about what you see here. Do not worry about my feelings. I am a writer. I have had everything from people fawning over my work to refusing to blow their nose with it, stating it would be putting their snot in bad company.

Halloween passed through the area a few days ago. While I do not care much for the holiday (not much for candy or dressing like an idiot), I did feel a gleeful, child-like grin creep its way on my face when night fell. Of course, it had nothing to do with the hordes of grubby-handed children swarming through the neighbor in search of the biggest score of saccharine and high fructose corn syrup. The chill in the air, enough to make me zip my jacket up a little more than usual, sparked an awareness of the coming season. Winter is approaching and, with it, snow.

For a couple of years now, winter has not meant much to me. I was too busy last year to even notice when it snowed in my area; my wife had to tell me. Now, I am not completely numb. I noticed it was cold – frigid in fact. But, the season sneaked in behind me. By the time I noticed enough of a difference to look over my shoulder, it was gone.

Not this year. I see you coming, Frost. I have my eye on you.

With a few years between me and my last really enjoyable winter, all of my ski equipment had been boxed up and packed away. I spent the weekend after Halloween digging through those boxes to find all my gear. No one has ever been so happy to discover several old, lint-covered pairs of long underwear. A few jackets, ski bibs (yes, I still wear bibs), and socks later, I found the crowned jewel – my ski boots. They really are not anything special, but they are my boots and contain many fond memories. Sure, I have skis and poles… the whole nine yards. But, boots are what make the difference. Besides, this year I am leaving the skis (oh, and you know they are old, straight skis too) and poles behind. The boots come with me. This year, I am skiboarding.

No, not snowboarding. No, not skiing. Some strange hybrid that requires three legs? Maybe. We will have to wait and see. Actually, I have seen. That is why I am doing it this year. Plainly put, skiboarding looks like a blast. Want to tackle moguls and trees? Go right ahead. Jumps and terrain park calling? Pick up the phone. They can go anywhere skis or snowboards can go (and some places they can’t) without blinking a wind-whipped eye. Haven’t ever skied or snowboarded before, but still want to do all those things? You’ll be shredding the slopes in no time (for those that don’t know, shredding is a good thing).

I will not shedding any further light on the subject at this time. It is for your own protection. I do not want to be responsible for your head exploding from all your excitement. We still have a few, seemingly interminable weeks left before the first mountains start to open. If you cannot wait a little longer for some candid on-board accounts from yours truly, there are some great websites and forums online to learn more, www.skiboardsonline.com being my of my preferred first stops for a solid forum community and online gear shop as well as videos and photographs. But don’t say I didn’t warn you. A skiboard grin is contagious.

I hate having a nosy neighbor. I picked up my leaves for the 5th time already this fall yesterday and not even half of my trees have dropped their leaves. That's not the point.

We were cleaning out the gutters today when I was trying to toss my wife the hose from the ground up to her on the roof. She's a climber so I let her monkey around up there. Our latter is only an 8 footer and the roof is some 25-30 feet off the ground.

So as I am winding up and tossing the hose up to her to spray out the gutters he's standing in his garage all the way across the street yelling at me to get a latter and to do it this way and that way. He's always got an opinion on this or that and it is super annoying because he's the kind of person who doesn't care what anyone else thinks he's going to tell you what he thinks and that's it.

He's told me flat out he hates teachers, guess what? Charlotte, my wife, is a teacher. Sheesh! Yet he tells me all the time how lucky I am to have her.

Argh! I guess I am just sick of him in general. He's retired so he has nothing else to do but pick on someone else's lawn when he's not mowing his own. It's just frustrating hearing him tell me what I should do with my yard, and so forth! Grrrr

Always in our business, even though it's none of his.

*End Rant.

the IF3, even pro skiers are jerks...

ok so i go every year to a thing called the IF3, international freeski film festival in montreal, and every year, i really get the feeling that these pro skiers think they are above everyone else.

its bad enough that a large portion of freestyle skiing are immature kids trying to be like tanner hall.

so while i was watching one of the movies, these two people come sit next to me, and one of them is from poor boyz and the other is some pro skier who i recognize, her name is Lindsey something i forget. and they start talking to me as if im star struck or something.

after a while one of them goes ''dude dont you know who we are? im the dude from poor boyz and she pro skier Lindsey (whatever her name is)'' as if im supposed to then realize and be all impressed. well i wasnt really and jsut replied, ''hi im jason'', to which they responded by putting on a puzzled look on their face.

i first i thought they where joking but as they kept talking i realized these people are really full of themselves, even the other people who came with me to watch the movies who dont ski or skiboard commented about it after the show.

and of course when eric pollard shows up jay lev had to yell out ''hey look everyone pollard is here, come get your autographs''

and tanner, well tanner is just really arrogant, i think everyone can agree, making his own movies about himself and coming to the show in a limo written TANNER on it.

im not trying to hate here, but im just really glad that skiboarding never was like that and probably never will be. even other sports like rollerblading or skateboarding dont have that kind of celebrity status.

and the freeskier kids eat it up too, when tanner hall was walking around kids where yelling his name out trying to get a high five and shit.

skiig right now seems to be in a total period of excess, and honestly it doesnt make them look good.

on the plus side, i did see and catch up a little with Bailey Mitchell, who was down from the west coast for the event.

I will be doing the regular 20 miles on my bike 3-4 times a week and a little bit of weight training as well. This year though I am going to add daily sit ups and push ups. 100-200 situps and about 100 push us a day is the goal.

I will also add wall sits to strenthen my legs for skiboarding. I'll start at 1:30 a day and work up to 3-4 minutes per session.

So I've bought season passes the last couple of years and got my money's worth out of it 2 years ago, but this last year I didn't. I am probably not going to buy a pass this year as I'd rather move around the state and head more up in Courtney's direction and hit up the UP and Minnesota more. I'd like to also have a place to hit up during the week when I have the itch, but at $28/night for a small mole hill I don't know how much I'd go. It'd be about $240/season for the pass.

Such a hard decision, grr wish I could make up my mind!

I have just gotten heavy into a new summer sport .. stand up paddleboarding or SUP for short .. it has it's own culture and web sites and I recently got a new board that I am all excited about ... It is just a little bigger then my skiboards at 10'10" x 28" , way more expensive then a pair of skiboards ( my quiver will not be as extensive I am sure ) , and way , way more difficult to hide the purchase from my wife ... :)!

Although the company BIC is french .. the board itself like many sailboards is made by a factory in East Asia ...
