For the last couple of months I have been watching the last bits of snow melt off the mountains. From my office window I could still see patches of snow into early July. We even had a freak snow storm round about the end of June - to coincide with the MTB World Cup. It's all gone now though.

It's August and it has been exceptionally hot in Europe these last weeks. Not that I am complaining - I like the variety of weather. I like to see the pine trees get an extra glow of green, watching the bearded vultures ride the air streams and having a picnic in the shade at the heat of the day. I has been an amazing summer so far.

But slowly I am thinking about winter again. I am wondering when the leaves will discolor, when the first snow will fall and how much there will be.

Officially season starts in December, but they have opened earlier when the snowfall in November was good enough.

We had a light dusting when I was away last week, and it melted away by the time I got back no Wednesday. However, it snowed through-out the night and this morning around 2000m elevation. This is more than a a dusting. I am quite keen to have a walk on the weekend for a closer inspection.

It is, however, quite a bit early, so i would expect it to melt at some stage before the real snow starts to fall.

Forked out the €400 yesterday for the seasonal ski pass. First time in my life I ever had the priviledge of buying something like that,

Now I only need 10 half-days on the slopes to have made my money back.

The local resort, official opens 1 Dec.

Dec 1st might be the official seasoning update, but I got out this morning. In what is probably a first in Andorra I skinned up on Ospreys with the backcountry bindings. They worked like a dream. Even with the cross-over boots instead of proper touring boots it just went smoothly.

It's been dumping the whole day. Hopefully tomorrow will have some visibility and be a powder day.
